C'est magnifique! Changed up the normal routine and made a detour to Detour Bakery before my flight home. It was my good fortune to do so as the baked goods inside would soon transport me to wonderful memories of the Parisian boulangeries and patisseries.
I arrived around 8:30 AM and waited around 10 minutes as the line steadily progressed. One in, one out. Inside the bakery, there was the beautiful sound of French being spoken between the team of employees and some customers too. I was able to parler un petit francais avec un employee qui est tres agreeable.
Though tempting to load up and try one of everything, I ordered a pain au chocolat ($2.99), petit gateau au chocolat ($3.29), cinnamon roll ($5.99), housemade macaroons ($4.50), and coffee ($2.50). A quick $21 changed hands and out the door I went en route to the airport.
As I drove, I decided to "just" eat the petit gateau. From the first to the last bite, each was packed with such wonderful richness of chocolat and perfect density. There was no way I could or would wait to try the pain au chocolat. Hands down the best I have had in years (and I have had a lot of these...)! Every bite was flaky on the outside and chewy on the inside with a consistent layer of chocolate. Every. Single. Bite. It is so good that there will be follow up trips here.
As I conclude this review, the cinnamon roll and macaroons are tempting me. Willpower is holding strong but ask me in a few hours. Don't take it from me but from the collective reviews, Detour Bakery is delicious and should be a stop on your next trip to the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThere are so many great bakeries in this city, no one can afford to be mediocre. Detour Bakery is definitely not mediocre! Because it's a small space, and they don't have a refrigerated bakery case, they do a limited line of French pastries, focusing on croissants, a couple sweet rolls, cloufouti, 1-2 seasonal quick breads, 3-4 different yeast breads, and 4 different kinds of mini quiche. What they do, they do extremely well. I have never had anything less than stellar from Detour Bakery. I was a professional baker for almost 25 years, and Detour meets all of my high expectations. I also live in the neighborhood, within walking distance, and this is such a gem for us. The pecan sticky buns (which they only sell on Fridays and Saturdays) are PHENOMENAL, easily the best sticky buns I have ever had, and they are HUGE, and a great deal for $7.00. The coffee menu is also really good, and I think their coffee is better than that pretentious, yuppy place next to the swim school. Also, get a quiche while you are here! The crust is flakey and buttery. My favorite is the mushroom...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis bakery never fails to disappoint me. I used to love coming here under the old owner, but since the change, have consistently had lack luster service and sub par pastries. The viennoise used to be a delightful, delicate, decadent cream filled pastry. Now itās regularly not available, and not from selling out but from not being ready near opening. Several times itās been hidden in the back and the employees seem annoyed to retrieve it off a rack. When we do manage to get some the quality has steadily degraded. What was once stuffed with beautiful pastry cream is now a dry dollop on top with barely a teaspoon inside. Unfortunately weāll no longer be giving this bakery any...
