It's nearly impossible to watch the bad reviews of a place like Sojo's and not laugh. There's a good general rule when perusing Google for a review of a place, if there are a ton of 5 star reviews and a small handful of bad or poor reviews (less than 20%) then you can bet that the place is excellent. The snooty and self centered will place a bad review to make themselves look good. People who work and/or otherwise are rooting for the competition (family, friends or otherwise supporters of other similar businesses) will place a bad review because they know that the host of other great reviews means that there's real competition in such a great business. The sad part is the laughable complaints that have no bearing on what's really going on at Sojo's and show just how shallow and banal these reviewers must be. Is it possible that they just caught the business on a bad day? Maybe. But in the 4+ years that I've been going there I've NEVER experienced that, so I think my first assessment stands. Regular coffee drinkers who don't want the burnt carbon flavour of Starbucks look for small mom & pop places where the coffee is about the flavour, the decor about a home and comfy feel and the people are generally good and fun to be around. Sojourners is that place, it's great coffee and food, great surroundings, and great people working there and it's really just that simple. There are rare times when there's 1 or 2 people in Sojo's but most of the time it's well packed from morning to late afternoon and that is the best review of all. Don't bother with any other coffee shop within 50 miles, don't head downtown to fight traffic all day and get mediocre coffee. Grab your iPad/Laptop/book of the day and head to Sojo's for good eats and a...
Read moreI have been coming to Sojourners for the better part of 15 years. I've always loved the community hub it is. I was thrilled by the new ownership (many of us were afraid it would permanently close a few years ago) but to our surprise the new owner kept things pretty much the same but several improvements. He was so great to see regularly and he really took a lot of pride in the changes he made. Recently, however, the business model is different. Prices are up and food items are clearly from Costco. Nutrigrain bars and croissants, etc. Sometimes you get a real barista and sometimes you. And when you don't....boy you don't. There are a couple really nice employees and a few others that are so rude. I'd been looking for an opportunity to tell the owner directly of some of my concerns but I never see him around anymore. The last time my cappuccino was room temp I asked them to heat it up the barista was so annoyed and said "well I called your name twice" and then they nuked it in the microwave! I would love to see this place get back to the quality it has long had. I just can't justify 5 bucks for a Costco/Sam's Club danish and a hit or miss cup of joe. My dad owns a coffee shop and I know it's a tough business but Sojourners can't rely on it's historic reputation for much longer. It's time to make some quality...
Read moreI have been excited to try this spot since I live nearby, but I ended up a bit disappointed. I came in for a pastry, iced coffee and some coffee beans. The atmosphere is cute with a nice theme and lots of seating. It took a while for the barista to come out and assist myself and the other person in line, but she was quick once she knew we were there. I love a good pastry, and was bummed to find that most of the pastries they had were just from Costco. Costco has good pastries, but I don’t need to spend $6-7 on just one when I can go get a whole container of them for the same price. However, the cold brew was good. What also surprised me was the coffee beans. While I have made some good coffees with them, it was $22 for a 12oz bag, not even a full pound, which seems exorbitant. I didn’t realize how expensive they were until it was too late. Maybe their actual food menu is better and I should try that next time, but I probably won’t hurry back. With some changes, I think this could be a really great neighborhood spot with its nice location...
