El Toreado Mexican Bar & Grill — Restaurant in Des Moines

We have dined at many Mexican restaurants in Des Moines and I would rank this one at the bottom. The fajita steak was in larger pieces and difficult to cut. The ground beef in the enchiladas was similar to a fast food restaurant like Taco Johns. In fact, the atmosphere and overall vibe was much like a fast food restaurant. It was not the quality expected for the price. The server was attentive and friendly. My only complaint with him was not asking what size tap beer I wanted. I was not aware that there was more than one size and he brought me the largest. I did not expect to pay $10 for a beer and really didn't want more than the typical 16 ounce draft. Lastly, $2 and change was added as a service charge. I presume that was because I paid with a credit card. Given the food quality, portion size and prices, I was a bit disappointed to see the additional charge. We came in hungry and left full but that is about the most positive thing I can say...

I have to say first that the staff was very very welcoming and attentive and all around very nice. The food was great as well. However I have to say I was very much upset with the bill. Maybe I don't eat out enough these days and it's me. For 3 sodas a milk for drinks, a kids hot dog and fries one taco salad and then to meals one the Cajun shrimp and another that was two small burritos and of course the two meals had the usual sides again all great food. Our bill was over $90 I don't think I have ever spent so much at a Mexican restraint especially for the small amount of food that we got. This hot dog an fries was $9 and we were asked if we wanted cheese dip with our chips later to find out that that bowl of cheese was $10. My wife and I are in town with our 5mo son as I'm racing in the Ironman 70.3 and this joint was close to our hotel and the food looked good. Our hunch was spot on.

Service was prompt and friendly, food was delicious and the portions are well worth the prices. We ended up grabbing a couple of boxes and they provided a container for the leftover chips which is always appreciated to eliminate waste, but what really sticks out is the character of the staff. We watched all of the staff come and interact with each of the 6 tables which were occupied, and they even came over to interact with our son and were understanding when my wife needed to stand up and walk around to calm him.
