Tasty Tacos transcends the simple definition of a restaurant; it's a vibrant tapestry of cultural history, woven into the heart of Des Moines since its inception in 1961 by the visionary Richard and Antonia Mosqueda. Their stroke of genius—marrying the soul of authentic Mexican flavors with the unexpected, comforting embrace of Indian fry bread—transformed the humble taco into an elevated culinary experience. This wasn't just innovation; it was a bold statement, a reinterpretation of tradition that resonated through generations. The scarcity of locations today only heightens the sense of pilgrimage, the almost sacred return to a place where memories are as rich as the dishes themselves. Stepping inside is akin to entering a time capsule, where the aroma alone—a complex blend of spices, frying dough, and shared laughter—unleashes a torrent of nostalgia. It's a visceral reminder of family, of community, and of the enduring power of food to connect us to our past. The very walls, adorned with historical snapshots and testimonials, whisper tales of a family's unwavering commitment to their craft. To assess Tasty Tacos through a lens of contemporary culinary critique is to fundamentally misunderstand its purpose. This isn't about chasing Michelin stars; it's about preserving a legacy. It's about the palpable sense of love and dedication infused into every taco, every dish. The imperfections, if any exist, are merely the charming fingerprints of authenticity. For those in pursuit of an 'authentic' experience, prepare to be enthralled—not just by the explosion of flavors, but by the narrative that unfolds with each bite, the smiles that persevere amidst the bustling crowds, and the enduring spirit of the Mosqueda family, including Ronald M., whose passion continues to nourish a...
Read moreI’ve heard SO many raves about Tasty Tacos, but I was extremely disappointed by my experience (at least at this location). Upon entering the building there was a very off putting odor. Literally smelled of a dead mouse/mice. Dead mice have a distinct odor and that is exactly what this smelled of. Things happen and it is just starting to get cold so it/them likely could have been trapped, but for as strong as the smell was it was definitely left rotting. This ruined my appetite. It FILLED the restaurant (could even smell it in the bathroom). Service was fast. Clerk at the counter wasn’t very welcoming or friendly, but overall didn’t have a terrible experience with employees. The place didn’t seem very clean. The toilet in the women’s restroom is wobbly. Floors were dirty and several tables were left with previous customers’ food messes. After getting our food, I took a few bites and it was not anything to rave about. Mediocre taco. Spanish rice was, eh. Couldn’t get passed the smell enough to even want to eat more than those few bites. Left with throwing the rest of our food away and settled for fast food before leaving the city. Really hope this was just a location issue, as I’ve heard so many great things, and after going to this one on Euclid I was...
Read moreVery good, "tasty tacos." After babysitting I was super hungry but hadn't thought to raid the fridge like the parents said I could and once I left my stomach was grumbling and ready for food wherever it could find it, that's when I stumbled on a sign in big red letters called, TASTY TACOS, and tasty they are indeed! I only waited a few minutes and two of the loveliest flour tacos were handed to me on a tray along with cinnamon chips which were so warm and good with the honey I was given. I had their signature hot sauce and Guacamole with my flour tacos and let's just say oh it was the best tacos I'd had in a while. The cashier's were super friendly too and I even chatted with two nice girls who made me laugh, it was a awesome experience and I highly suggest going there if you are not just looking for cheaper tacos but quality tacos as well, cuz that's what they were! Ty Tasty Tacos, this location in iowa is amazing and a first place I would suggest others to try :) thanks again, I'll be dreaming bout those...
