NEVER GO TO TORERO'S!!!!
So... Went to Torero's in Durham for dinner. Little Mexican spot. Was about to tell u all to try this place. The food is decent. The portions are massive. But then we got the check. Working in a restaurant myself, I know to read the menu carefully.
We each ordered the "choose 3" combo. My husband got a chimi, chalupa and tamale. I got a chimi, tamale and relleno. All 3 of his items came on one plate with rice and beans. I got one plate with the relleno and the other two on another plate.
When we got the check they charged us for 2 of the "choose 3" combos and a separate charge of $8.95 for the relleno. When I told the server, she got the manager to come to the table.
He said that if we wanted to take the leftovers home we had to pay the entire bill. I told him i ordered 3 things, same as my husband. I got 3 things, but I was being charged for 4. He said if we saw 3 plates come to the table it was our responsibility to tell the server so she could fix it. His whole argument was that 3 plates were on the table and that's why we were charged for 3 dinners. Even though we only ordered and received 2 dinners, there were 3 plates.
We had never been to Torero's before. How are we supposed to know how many plates they use to serve their dinners? I still got exactly what I ordered, but on 2 plates. I was being charged $8.95 because my relleno came on the side?
We will definitely NEVER go back to Torero's, and the server missed out on a nice fat tip for her and the manager being completely rude and disrespectful, not to mention trying...
Read moreThis isn't a review a really want to write. I used to go to Torero's at their old location across from Bright Leaf (before that place blew up ... No, literally: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/04/10/durham-north-carolina-explosion-1-person-dead-building-collapse/3422977002/).
Anyway, at the old location they had a pretty solid cactus burrito that I enjoyed and was my go to. Since they've moved I've tried other items on the menu, but have been generally disappointed. Two or three times I've ordered the vegetable fajitas - usually a safe choice when ordering vegan (also I always emphasize vegan). The first few it was fine. The last time, I got a fun bonus of a large piece of poorly cooked steak in with my vegetables. Their one standing 'vegan option ' is little more than avocado on a pair of big chips and a touch of pico. It's fine, but not filling or really a meal. The staff seem very nice, but don't seem to understand what vegetarian or vegan means and I would be equally or even more wary if you had a food allergy to eat here. Ultimately unless they educate their staff and work on some better menu options that are clearly labeled, I won't...

Food was incredibly subpar and honestly led to me getting very sick.
Salsa was basically watery chunky tomatoes with black pepper.
To start, we ordered a bowl of guacamole. It came out and was virtually tasteless, kind of like one of those avocado spreads you get at a deli. I asked for some limes for the guacamole. Upon receiving the bill, limes will cost you $1.75.
Ordered the Suiza and Crema enchiladas. They came out promptly on a plate that had clearly been under a broiler. The green sauce tasted like a canned purée. The crema sauxe was not sauce, more like caked on, broiled ricotta cheese. It was bizarre. The ground beef inside had the texture of finely ground Taco Bell meat minus the seasoning. Rice was hard and bland, beans were runny. A soda will cost you $2.75 by the way.
There are way better spots to get Mexican food in town that won’t destroy your stomach. Would not...
