UPDATE: Eddie asked me to take down my review, and tried to scare me with insinuations of legal action. He said to me, "These false claims can end up in litigation." He sent me a long and unhinged series of messages, from which I can only conclude that nothing has changed at spring rolls.
I did not want to hurt this business, I was hoping that I could improve the situation, but it seems that is not going to happen, so I will reveal the truth: I saw Eddie drinking on the job from behind the bar, many times, to the point of drunkenness. I saw him offer free drinks to customers, which is a violation of liquor laws. I watched him handle food with his fingers, in the kitchen, many times, and at the time I was working there, they were having issues with health inspections. I have not returned to the restaurant since I quit working there, because I do not feel comfortable doing so, so I cannot say for sure whether things have improved, but I am not optimistic. I think that this restaurant probably ought to be closed down.
Original review: I worked in this restaurant. Eddie and Susan should go back to their lovely restaurant in Raleigh instead of trying to make this one work. They don't have the time and energy between them to run two restaurants in two cities. Many corners are cut behind the scenes, and many customers would never return if they knew what I knew. Do not trust the vegan or vegetarian options, everything goes in the same fryer, including the supposedly...
Read moreWalking through downtown Durham while waiting to attend an event I was drawn into Sprihg Rolls. This was not due to an aroma or a sign, but by one of the staff members Radley. I was looking at their menu outside when the door suddenly opened, and here is this attractive dude telling me to come in out of the cold. He hands me a menu and asks me a series of questions, and tells me to stay.
After checking out the menu, I decided to stay and sit at the bar. We continued our conversation while I sipped some water and ordered broccoli and chicken. The owner, Eddy, appears out of nowhere and chats it up with me. Eddy told me about how they opened during the pandemic and somehow stayed afloat on to go orders. Now, they stay pretty busy and have community events throughout the month.
Then, a challenge from the owner to play jenga. As we played, my food came out pipping hot. The broccoli had a slight crunch, and the brown sauce that topped the other vegetables and chicken was light and not sweet or overpowering. The brown rice was okay, but I think next time, I will try their fried rice.
I continued to dig in while I lost at jenga.
Five stars for this gem on main street. The food was fresh and delicious; and they were super generous with their portions. Also, where can you go, and you end up playing jenga with the owner? I...
Read moreBeen wanting to try this place. Had a taste for lo mein tonight and Spring Rolls delivered!... Well, not literally 😅 I called to order to-go at 8:32 under the impression they closed at 9. I hate doing that but I called just to see if they were still taking orders. The gentleman on the phone was polite and eager to take my order. I get there and find out they close at 11, even better! I should have gotten his name but I'm assuming the guy who took my order was who took my payment... Mad cool!! Great energy, shared some laughs, cool first impression. Now for the food...
House Lo Mein hit the spot! Flavors were great. I also got hot and sour soup. Now, everyone's hot and sour soup is NOT the same. But I always order it when I try a new place so I know for future reference if I can trust them with my taste buds. Their soup had green onions in it which I'm not used to in HSS. It was a little overpowering but a welcomed difference. Consistency was great, not too watery and the spice was on point, wish there was a pinch more sour, but I would def order again.
I have to come back for the full dine-in experience but so far, I'm pleased with my...
