Lupe's Mexican Cafe — Restaurant in East Bernard

We thoroughly enjoyed this stop along our way back home. We plan to stop again on our next visit to the Houston area. The queso, described as Velveeta, was way more than just Velveeta. They serve two salsas, a warm, red salsa and a cool, green salsa. Both were delicious and the chips were nice and crispy. I ordered some of the best enchiladas I have ever had at the recommendation of our server. Enchiladas Romanas. Creamy sauce with chicken, grilled onions, poblano peppers, and mushrooms. It came with rice and charro beans. I normally sub out for refried beans, but I enjoyed their charro beans and the rice was flavorful, but I did add salt to both. They were extremely busy that night, so I filled up on the queso and chips before our meal got there, so I was only able to eat one enchilada since we had ordered tortillas with our queso. The homemade tortillas were a little thick for our liking, but that is the only negative thing I can say. My daughter, who isn’t a big fan of Mexican food, ate a burger. She said it was one of the best burgers she has eaten at a Mexican restaurant. My husband ordered the Jean Carlo. It came with a cheese enchillada, tamale and fajita taco, rice and refried beans. First time here and had a bad experience. Salsa, and queso were great my husband salad was good... All was good until I started eating from my plate. One bite of enchilada good, Go to cut my tamale and there's a hair in my Tamale. I told the waitress and she said "well I have to see about this because we have no blondes here." Well to be exact it wasn't a blonde hair it was a gray hair. She Didn't offer to make right or anything. Then we get to register the hostess there was rude and cold. Compared to the the way she was so talkative to the previous customer. No "how was your food?" "Sorry for what what happen " NOTHING!! She just gave us a cold shoulder and acted like it was our fault. I'm so disappointed!! After all the good reviews I read. Then to experience this. I could have over look the hair and came back again. But, with that service never again. I was starving, and then to see the hair and get the treatment we got was so uncalled for and certainly not worth the price we paid excluding my plate. I gave it a one star for the Salsa and Dr pepper.
