After waiting several weeks for the grand opening crowd to scale back, my boyfriend and I tried Agave Azul. Unfortunately, our experience today was awful and we will not return.
The restaurant was not crowded, as we dined around 2:00pm on a Sunday. We were seated promptly in the bar area, where there were initially no other patrons (an additional table was seated near us shortly after). We decided on an appetizer, Queso Fundito. I ordered the Steak Patron with a Pepsi to drink, while my boyfriend had the Shrimp Chimichanga. While ordering, it concerned me that our waiter failed to inquire as to how I wanted my steak cooked, but I made note to tell him that I wanted it rare to medium rare, which he confirmed.
My Pepsi was delivered, and it was flat. Not ideal, but also not a dealbreaker. Our Queso Fundito arrived without the tortillas that the menu stated it should have come with. It seems like either the waiter or runner should have noticed that, but we had a bowl of chips on the table so while annoying, this wasn’t a dealbreaker either. I’ll note that when the bowl of chips was empty, we had to request a refill because our waiter simply was not attentive.
Next to arrive was my entree, the Steak Patron. We were quick to notice that my boyfriend’s Shrimp Chimichanga did not immediately follow, and in fact did not arrive for a full five minutes. Once both dishes were on the table, I cut into my steak and noticed immediately that it was overcooked - well done - and there was a considerable amount of fat. I trimmed the fat away, noticing that the amount of fat on the steak seemed excessive. As I continued trimming, it became apparent that about 50% of the “steak” was actually fat. Not okay. With fat literally covering the bottom of my plate, I ate the sparse meat. The six shrimp were overcooked. Badly. I ate four of them, leaving two on my plate - one of the two having not been deveined. Also not okay. The sides that came with the meal were vegetables, potatoes, and rice. The rice was delicious; no complaints. The potatoes were bland and cold to the point of being inedible. The mixed vegetables were obviously frozen, bagged vegetables tossed onto the grill - also inedible.
After our meals were delivered to the table, the waiter did not return until we finished eating. When he arrived, he glanced at my plate (see photos) and asked if I wanted a box. As shown in the photos, I could have boxed up two overcooked, filthy shrimp, disgusting vegetables, and a pile of fat - rather, I informed the waiter of the issues with my steak and shrimp. He, in turn, grabbed my plate and left the table. He returned several minutes later with the check. He mumbled something quietly, and between the loud music and mumbling, all I could make out was “ten percent” and “I’m sorry”. I looked at the check - assuming that a 10% discount had been applied - and found that we were being billed for the full meal. We paid the check and left (mind you, a waiter was seated in a chair right next to the front door, playing on his phone), calling the manager on the way home to find out what happened.
The manager informed me that he looked at the plate (again, music so loud that I could barely understand what he was saying over the phone), and told me he wanted us to return to the restaurant sometime, and he would make it right. He said that he was simply having a busy day. I informed him that we would not return, as he was given the opportunity to make the situation right while we were still at the restaurant, but he failed to do so.
Here’s the deal: It wasn’t busy. Not by a long shot. The staff far outnumbered the patrons while we were there. The cook should have made the decision not to prepare the steak once he saw the amount of fat on it. Serving frozen vegetables, though, I’d imagine this is par for the course. The server never checked in to ask how the food was. Serving 101. They had the opportunity to fix the problem and did not.

Read moreUpdating Review from 4 stars to 1. Finally, came back to this place after our first experience which was fine. We sat at the bar and I ordered two of the 99cent margaritas while I waited for my brother to get there. As I stated in the previous review, many of the staff speak little to no english which is an issue for me. I had to order two of the specials THREE times before they finally understood me. I kept saying "DOS DOS DOS"....then they finally understood. Again, the vast majority of customers are english speaking, gotta do better with getting staff that at least speaks rudimentary english. My brother arrived, they gave us the menus, then asked us to order 30 seconds later. We said we needed more time....and that was it...they never came back. We kept staring at our waitress but after 20 minutes we walked out and went to a truly fabulous mexican restaurant - Los Arcos. While the 99cent margaritas are a nice marketing ploy....they are basically watered down Sweet and Sour mix. I've given them two chances. I wont be going back.
I was excited to visit this recently opened Mexican restaurant in Edmond. The atmosphere was nice, food was excellent, and delivered fast.
However, they have some kinks to work out before we go back.
The manager came by and gave me a sample of their house Margarita after I couldn't order the Orgasm which was a nice touch. I ended up getting the Italian Margarita which was so good that I couldn't really tell how much Tequila was in the drink (it was a lot since I was buzzing pretty good 20 minutes later). The food was lightning fast and my one taco platter was fabulous.
My wife and I will be waiting three months then giving them another try to see if they work...
Read moreOnce upon a time, while heading to another Mexican restaurant just a block away, something caught my eye. Out of the corner of my vision, I spotted a striking facade with bold letters practically urging me to stop and see what was cooking inside. Ever since that day, I couldn’t get it out of my mind. Was the food as exciting as the look of the place? After months of telling myself I’d give it a try, the stars finally aligned today. And what better way to brighten up a gloomy afternoon than to explore a new restaurant?
I arrived just past 1:00 p.m., well after the lunch rush, and since it was a Tuesday, I expected a lighter crowd. Perfect timing to really take it all in.
Food
The menu was packed with tempting dishes—honestly, I wished I could try them all at once. I decided on the Shrimp Zarandeados, and they did not disappoint. The real surprise, though, came before the entrée: the grilled onions and the thick, spicy red salsa served with chips were an absolute home run. So good, in fact, that I almost asked if I could buy some to take home. Portions were just right—not too much, not too little.
Service
The service was fine overall, though nothing stood out in particular. One thing I did notice was that some of the male servers stood idly near their tables, sometimes chatting amongst themselves. While not necessarily “wrong,” it did look a little odd, especially for a restaurant that gives off a more upscale vibe. In the industry, it’s generally frowned upon, so a bit more attentiveness would elevate the service.
Atmosphere
The restaurant itself is beautifully designed and decorated—I especially loved the bathrooms, which were surprisingly elegant. That said, my critic’s eye couldn’t help but notice a few details. The hanging lamps above the tables were dusty and could use a good wipe to keep the place looking as polished as it deserves. Also, the booths felt a bit too upright for comfort, which made sitting for a while just slightly uncomfortable.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I was highly impressed. You’re doing a fantastic job of presenting Mexican cuisine at a higher level—not only through great flavors, but also by offering it in a clean and stylish...
