I wrote a review about a year or two ago, but when I was recently at the Taste of Himalayas in El Cajon, but thought it was time to do so again after I noticed a review from our outstanding Supervisor for District 2, Mr. Joel Anderson (see picture), who is NOT related to me. Anyway, we've been ordering food there (from owner Dee and his highly competent and wonderful family!) at least twice per week ever since! A couple of important points to note is that their consistency, both in terms of excellent quality and quantity. There are never any surprises, with the latter (quantity) I've observed to be an increasing problem (reducing it) with other restaurants during these inflationary times. I could go on and on why I believe this is an outstanding restaurant and a "treasure" for El Cajon, but I think our eating their food twice or more per week speaks for itself. Just to cite one example, we find their Chickpeas to taste better than we ever had!
As an update today (5/5/25) to my previous reviews of the Taste of the Himalayas, which is specific ONLY to the El Cajon location (on 1748 East Main Street), I noticed they have also been recommended by "Restaurant Guru" for 2025. This is not surprising, as we've continued to order the same two vegetarian entrees (Chickpea and Vegetable Masala) twice per week. They continue to provide a consistently high level of quality and quantity! It feels quite good to have a restaurant you can count on for this, as well as having a pleasant and helpful staff of family members that have done an excellent job of maintaining this consistency. We are so pleased with every aspect of this location, and, after having previously tried numerous other locations for Indian food, we don't even consider ordering our...
Read moreI've sampled quite a few Indian Restaurants in the San Diego area, and I highly recommend the "Taste of the Himalayas" in El Cajon. While that name has other locations and I've tried them, this location stands out from the rest for me. They were voted the Best Indian Restaurant in Easy County in 2019 before COVID came into the picture, which resulted in them shifting to "take out" only. Their menu is quite "in depth;" and the quality is outstanding and consistently good, which I can attest to since we've been picking up food twice per week from them for about the last six months. The staff is friendly; responsive; the food is always ready in a timely manner; they have an "A" grade for cleanliness; and they don't cut your quantity of food, which sadly I've noticed more restaurants are doing during these inflationary times to cut their own costs. In sum, I want good food, and want a consistent amount of it, which they are providing! Also, I highly recommend their Chicken Chile and Chana Ra Chicken Curry...
Read moreMy wife and I love the food here. We have been to India and the food we ate there was exactly the same as the food we eat here at Taste of the Himalayas. The portion size is big and I always have enough left over for another meal at home. I often order another curry to take home to eat a couple of days later. The prices are very reasonable and you could easily fill yourselves up with a starter each, split a entree and a couple of naan. The reviews that said it is expensive have not eaten downtown.... we think it's very reasonable. I wish they would have onion bajii on the menu..... Take your own beer or wine because they don't have a license and they are quite happy to let you byo. All in all this is a great value for money authentic...
