I've been coming to Acadia National Park for decades, and it was finally time to try this sub place that we drive past every year. Perhaps this was an off-year or a weird weekend, but here was the situation on a Friday night in August 2020: --no adults and four teenagers, none of whom were wearing masks, and one of whom was heading home because she was feeling sick --no mask enforcement among customers --poor bread, poor ingredients, poor quality overall We tried various subs that night, but one in particular is worth mentioning. I requested--against my better judgment--a pepper and egg sub, which seemed to generate a good deal of confusion among the staff. One brave boy took it on, and proceeded to prepare the worst scrambled eggs I've ever seen in a professional setting. I'll have to try again next summer to see if it was a particularly poor showing, but after years of wanting to stop here, our curiosity has finally been satisfied (though not our desire for a decent sub in Ellsworth). I should also mention that I know that Maine has had a better time with COVID than most places. But given its tiny size and complete lack of ventilation, maskless nights at shops like this one will help ensure that Maine's luck...
Read moreThere is nothing GIANT about this place except a rip off, avoid this place unless you wanna pay $11.00 for something you could make at home. I thought we were being punked, we kept waiting for Ashton Kutcher to come out with a camera crew. A Large SUPER sub, it wasn't even Kevin Hart sized. I have had better subs from Subway that cost 1/2 as much. I asked for a Super sub with everything on it. What I got was the most tasteless sandwich " if you could even call it an edible sandwich". Where the hell was the lettuce? No onion, no sliced tomatoes, no oregano, o&v or even salt & pepper.
I watched the unfriendly kid making the sub trying to stuff the few pieces of meat into a half sliced bun. HOW TO MAKE A SUB A real sub shop, slices open the sub roll, spreads open the roll puts on the mayo..Then lays flat multiple slices of each meat (not a folded slice) onto the bread. Then your choice of cheese. Adds toppings like shredded lettuce, sliced onions, sliced tomatoes with salt & pepper, oregano then some oil & vinegar. That is a SUB
This is Maine, so far in 3 days there has yet to be anywhere we have eaten that would survive a week...
Read moreWe had been going there for years before moving away. It was our favorite sub shop and we ate there weekly. The elderly couple who owned the place were usually sitting at their booth and it was a great family atmosphere. The last few years, we have had the opportunity to travel through Ellsworth several times a month during the summer and was excited to be able to get my favorite pepperoni sub with sweet relish. It is such a disappointment that the quality and quantity of fillings has dropped so low and price has gone up. I tried for a second time this month, even telling the young lady taking my order that the roll for my sub last week was very stale & hard so please make sure to make it with a fresh soft roll. She basically shrugged it off without even an apology?! My sub was even worse than the one last week. The pepperoni was burnt, something had a bitter aftertaste and it had a very minimal amount of vegetables with almost no relish. About a 3rd of the roll was hard, as well. Definitely not worth trying...
