"Good enough." That's how I would describe Maverick's.
The restaurant is relatively new (they opened a few months ago at the time of this review), and, while there were some things the got right, there is plenty of room for improvement.
I'll start with atmosphere, the sports bar meets rustic theme feels disjointed. The seating, floors, bar, refinished antiques and art are beautiful! But then there are TVs and metal and neon signs everywhere that detract from what's already there. I get it, they want to be upscale, but not stuffy -- something just gets lost in translation unfortunately.
Earlier today I called and asked if I could make a reservation and was told "no, it's first come first served" which is okay, but when we arrived we ended up having to wait for 20 minutes for a table. Luckily there is Dustin Sinner's boutique right in the same building so we had something to do while we waited.
After visiting the shop, I asked the hostess if we could wait in the bar, she said yes, but I feel like that they should have offered that up front.
Once we got to our table, our waiter came to get our drink order, and while I wouldn't say he was unfriendly, he just could've been a bit more personable.
For drinks I thought I'd have a beer but the one I asked for was out, so I opted for a Manhatten, which was good! My wife ordered a beer, but then the waiter came back a while later and said that the beer she ordered was out as well and opted for a Coor's Light.
We ordered an appetizer first and went with their cheese curds. They were fine, but a little stale tasting. Just your average, run-of-the-mill cheese curds.
For my meal, I ordered the 18oz Porterhouse (medium-rare) with a side of hashbrowns (for a $1 upcharge) and a side salad. My wife ordered the crispy chicken salad.
The wait time for food to arrive wasn't too bad -- 15-20 minutes. Enough time for me to enjoy my drink and chat with my date.
Maybe I'm just a sucker for side salads, but I really enjoyed it! As far as side salads go, Maverick's was pretty good! Wish I could say the same for the steak.
When you are paying $30 for a piece of meat, there's a certain quality that you expect. While the cook and doneness on the steak were on point, the meat itself was kinda sinewy and chewy. Also, the steak was way over seasoned. I like the taste of the seasoning, but there was just too much of it. I tasted mostly salt where I expected good meaty steak. My hashbrowns were good, a little mushy, but not the worst I've had.
My biggest gripe with Maverick's has to be with their plates, serving dishes, and flatware. Trying to cut an already tough-ish piece of meat with a dull oversized steak knife on a plate that slides all over the place didn't help my experience.
My wife's salad was enormous. She said it was good.
Pros: Good salad Great cocktails Fun environment
Cons: Confusing hostess and seating situation. Not the friendliest staff Food was just "okay" Annoying dishes. Sub-par and over seasoned steak. I can still taste the salt in my mouth almost...
Read moreTraveling to Watertown for small family reunion, wanted something unique to Watertown, happened across this place. Visit was on 9/20/2024. Pretty disappointed overall. we were sat in a corner 1 booth from the window. being bitten by flies throughout our visit. We ordered ice tea for each of us, tea was weak and off flavor. ordered the walleye fingers. Tasted like fryer oil. I ordered the Blackened Maverick Fettuccine with signature steak on top. Ok, it was fettuccine but definitely not an Alfredo. Not horrible but not great. Steak was meh.... I've had much better from Applebee's, was expecting too much I suppose. Now on to the big issue the wife ordered Black & Blue Risotto, waitress told her it came with two sides, wife decided to upgrade both sides for an extra dollar each. her risotto was overcooked, Risotto should have a creamy, semi-fluid texture with a slight bite to the grains, what she received was basically mushy rice, slightly grainy coating. very disappointing. But the real kicker was the sides that she paid extra to upgrade never were served. when the waitress brought the check we looked at it and yes, the up-charge was there so we waited for the waitress to come back around and she acted surprised. Here is a hint, you won't be surprised 1 if you pay attention and 2 if you actually come by and check on your customer, like maybe "how is everything?". Anyhow after we pointed it out they did refund the 2 dollars but no compensation for the regular sides that were supposed to come with her meal. According to their menu each side was 2.99 so where was the extra $5.98 we didn't receive? So here's my thought, if you want to get attacked by flies, drink garden hose ice tea and eat hospital quality food this is the place for you. Otherwise stay away. And looking at other reviews it seems you have to prove you were there so I've attached copies of the before and after...
Read moreI had not eaten here since it was established under the Goss Opera House of Watertown. I ate at the former restaurant in the Opera house over 10 years ago, and while it was a cool experience, back then it was definitely in need of some work. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked through the front doors. This place has been renovated in a very tasteful way to give good merit to the name, Goss Opera House. It's a staple of Watertown and has been for years, but in my opinion, within the last 10 years that it has obviously gone through a transformation, this is a place the city of Watertown can be proud of and boast a bit. The restaurant is fairly large with a few different seating areas. Staff was very nice and helpful. The food was fantastic. I had the Ribeye, Steak and Stone special. What it is, you are served your steak uncooked on a "hot lava stone" to your table, and you cook it yourself to your liking right at your table. If you don't want to do that, you can just order a steak like normal and you can have it served to you cooked to your liking. I love to grill at home, and was intrigued by the Steak and Stone special, so I went for it. It was a fun and unique dining experience. Atmosphere was great, and while it was very busy and almost a full house, you aren't packed in like cattle. You're table is nicely spaced from the others so you can enjoy a conversation with your guest(s) without bumping elbows with the patrons at the table next to you. All in all, highly recommended Mavericks, for the dining, and the added extra bonus of it being tied in with the beautifully renovated Goss Opera House. After your meal take the few minutes to go up the stairs and check the Opera House out. You won't be...
