I had heard praise for Mediterranean Deli from devotees of their Chapel Hill location (including folks with Lebanese roots, so you know it’s legit). When when the Elon location opened, I jumped at the chance to try it! This location occupies the entire street level of a new building (built 2016-2017) in downtown Elon near the beautiful main campus of the eponymous university. The variety of dishes is staggering and includes influences from Greece, Turkey, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, and beyond! There are plenty of vegetarian options and dishes are labeled for common allergens. Pick up a slip of paper and a golf pencil when you enter, write down what you want as you walk along the case, and hand it to the cashier at the other end. Staff will then bring your food to your table. I managed to ask the guys behind the case a few questions and got a sample of one dish, but they didn’t seem eager to help or interact with the customers. The food runner was much friendlier and happy to answer questions when she wasn’t serving. Don’t miss the complimentary condiments bar for all the tahini, tzatziki, olives, and Lebanese pickles you can eat! The restaurant is nicely decorated with many Middle Eastern influences. There’s also a grocery section with fresh produce, fresh meats, packaged groceries, and Ziyad brand spices. Mediterranean Deli is a great addition to this bustling college town and the surrounding community and meets at least one need for a trip to one of the nearby...
Read moreGreat food. Don't let the 'Mediterranean' throw you, they have lots of choices so everyone can find something to eat if you ignore the names of the dishes. Lots of Vegan choices, lots of choices with meat. And they cook it all fresh, including the bread. It's all homemade.
They don't make what 'every other' restaurant has on their menu. They've got their own stuff, it's different, and it's good.
I believe this is a branch of the Deli by unc chapel hill.
I like a lot of things there {chicken, eggplant, tomato salad,, and on) . Been going here about a year now so thought I'd share a review.
The deal is you walk in and are confronted by a long wall (smorgasbord) of food choices, plus more dishes you can order. It's not self-serve, it's behind glass. It's not all you can eat: at a university they'd be out of business pretty soon then, right?
Allow extra time for your first visit to look at it all.
And like any good Deli they have the great desert choices: cheesecakes, ladies' fingers, a wide variety of goodies.
They also have take-home-to-cook shish-kabobs and other things.
Crowded while Elon is in session, not so when it's out, but all of the food remains fresh. I've tested.
5 stars for serving the target audience (university students) and being welcoming to the local community. Thanks for bringing a wide variety...
Read moreNo longer the Mediterranean Deli from the past 😒. The food was not great, but not inedible. The items I tried from the deli case were not fresh tasting. Maybe previous days leftovers mixed with a small batch of freshly made? 1 of the items was chicken salad, which was more like a celery salad with a bit of chicken.
The grilled chicken on my Greek salad was alright enough, but the chicken itself tasted low quality. Perhaps the chicken used is the more affordable that's not 100% white meat and instead white meat with rib meat added? Just an uneducated guess.
They aren't offering the Flatbread, which was the main reason I wanted to come back. Boooo!
Service is friendly and great, that upped what would've been a 2 star to a 3 star.
The atmosphere is extremely depressing, and reminds me of the cafeteria from my grade school days in the 90s. There is no decor and no Mediterranean style music playing. Hopefully this...
