Northern Expressions — Restaurant in Ely

LOVE THIS PLACE!! It was an ~85F day here so understandably, they had a suuuuper busy day. We came by at the end and Sarah, the owner and her team member who was there were both so welcoming and friendly and informative! I had the maple shake which features REAL (no corn syrup!) maple syrup from Wild Country in Lutsen, MN. My brother got the Big Muddy chocolate ice cream with caramel and brownie bits in it and he loved that a lot too. Note: a “single” scoop in a bowl translated into a generous three full scoops of ice cream, so that was a perfect amount! They have a huge assortment of flavors here and there is an attached gift shop which we didn’t make it into but look forward to coming back in for. Also, Sarah highly recommmended the Mini Donut Shake so we will likely have to come back for that too! Definitely come visit here while...

Northern Expressions is the kind of place you stumble into and immediately feel like you’ve found buried treasure—except instead of gold, it’s ice cream and malts (which is honestly better). It’s connected to an adorable gift shop packed with trinkets you didn’t know you needed until now. The line looked intimidating at first, but moved faster than my self-control around dessert. The ice cream was amazing, and the malts? Life-changing. Everything we tried was a hit. Wow! Tons of flavors of ice cream, homemade waffle cones & the nicest owner you'll ever meet! I called to see if they were open upon arriving since I didn't want to unload kids in the rain if it was closed. Which it was but she happily offered to open back up for us!! Not only did she do that but she invited us to stay & eat our ice cream in the store. She visited with us the whole time and my girls simply ADORE her (& her sweet pup, we met later on).
