Can't speak to the experience of the previous reviewer - sounds like a bad day all around. But here is my review from Yelp: Please know this up front - this is real Big Easy cookin'. If you are not an afficianado, if you are not into the intensely complex favors of cajun, you probably won't like Pasche's and might be happier at a more predictable chain restaurant, maybe something at the Firekeepers casino to the south.
I joined some friends for a birthday celebration here the other night. This was my fifth visit over the years, and the cuisine has never ceased to delight. Take Exit 104 off I-94 and turn left, and there you are. Pasche's is really not that much of place, just a deep purple dining room accented with black wrought iron and Tiffany glass windows with a nice bar off to the side; it's tucked away in a somewhat anonymous chain motel. The bar and dinner prices are more in line with a fancier setting, but the food is really worth it. I enjoy its non-pretentious setting featuring a kitchen focused on quality and authenticity instead of some 8-page corporate-approved menu. This place is all about the food, so don't expect TVs blinking from every corner and walls dripping with kitsch.
We started at the bar, enjoying the beautiful copper panels inset into the wood, and marveling at the huge bottles of flavored vodkas steeping. The wine and beer list is not extensive but satisfactory. The night's special was a Spicy Mojito, a concoction much enjoyed by one of our party who remarked on the ginger and cinnamon zipping up the mint. He had two. We enjoyed alligator tail (hmmm maybe a little like chicken??) and fried pickles for appetizers. Like every fried dish I've had here, the batter is very light and nicely seasoned, and all is cooked at the right temp and time for a crispy, delicious result.
The gumbo can be ordered with shrimp or with a variety of seafood; the roux is dark and complex, and the level of heat just enough to warm your head without quite taking it off. The crayfish bisque is rich and creamy and seasoned with a lighter hand. I had Jambalaya and my partner Shrimp Etouffe, and we shared, savoring the memories of a visit long ago to K Paul's Kitchen in New Orleans that our meals brought back. It's that good.
If your budget is a bit tight, get a PoBoy Sandwich which is no more expensive than your average roadside burger plate. Try it with oysters or popcorn shrimp. But as long as you are here, you might as well splurge for a real seafood dinner.
If you like it spicy and rich, you might like the Pasta Mardi Gras, where they don't skimp on the seafood. The sherry sauce on the Blackened Mahi Yvette has to be tasted to be believed. The crab cakes are authentic New Orleans, not Chesapeake, and huge. Also, don't miss the specials chalked on a board in the lobby - they aren't presented with your menu in the dining room like most restaurants. My service has been consistently good but not outstanding. The servers do not hover and they won't hound you to order more. I've never had room to order dessert although some day I will try the Bananas Foster or maybe Bread Pudding with bourbon sauce.
If you like cajun food, you will LOVE this place. If you haven't tried it but enjoy other flavorful traditions -- Thai, Szechuan, Indian -- you owe it to yourself to try Pasche's. This is a little gem in southwest Michigan. I think this is my new favorite restaruant. Laissez les...
Read moreMy mother and I had dinner Pasche's. We both had the Cajun Perch. Let me first say that our waitress was sweet, but must had been one of the grandchildren of the owners because she had no clue about anything on the menu. Second, when asked about our meal, my mother and I both spoke up and told our waitress that the Cajun Perch had no flavor or kick to it, almost as if the Perch came right from the freezer. The young lady smiles and walks off! (If she is new or shy, better get used to the way this world works because I pay for something I best better be getting what I pay for) Another waitress (I'm assuming the lead waitress) came up and asked about the food. We shared our feedback with the waitress and she apologized and said she would mention it to the cook (HUGE mistake!) We hear the waitress politely inform the cook about the Cajun Perch may not have enough seasoning. The cook, she starts going off about how she is not going to make everyone happy and we are just waiting to complain (extremely unprofessional, which made us feel uncomfortable inside your restaurant.) Well the cook now starts walking around the restaurant and she stops at our table and asks how the food is. For a third time I repeat myself and expressed my dissatisfaction. The cook, she goes all out defense mode and starts to tell my mom and I that she makes it the same way and she would bring out the recipe for making the batter. My mom spoke up and said this Perch and cornbread really has no flavor ma'am. The older lady continues to speak rude to us as if we are the problem saying that I make it the same way every time and she will not change anything for us. Do not come out asking for my opinion about your McDonald's flavoring Perch and then humiliate me in front of other guests. This cool needs an attitude adjustment. She claims to have been working there for ten years with the owner, but that does not give her the right time speak so condescending to the guest as she did to us and another gentleman a couple of tables by us who complained about his meal. I will say that this is the second time we have been to this place only to be treated disrespectfully. I almost thought I was at a Dick's Last Resort restaurant by the way this cool was speaking crazy to everyone. So if you want to have right out of the freezer quality food with a side of cook attitude, come to Pasche's and you...
Read moreWent to Pasche's last night at 6p on Saturday April 30th and had quite an experience. Kayla, our waitress was busy, but wonderful and the food was great. Hostess was good too. My wife and i were ready to leave and our waitress was unavailable so my wife went up to ask the bartender for a to-go box and our bill if she had it. Her attitude and response was anything but professional. Bartender claims, 'i don't know where you are' and i can't do that'. Mind you, her small bar was half full and if she didn't notice us in her bar, she has more problems than i thought. Bartender walked away and was immediately audibly talking trash to her other bar customers about us, which we could hear! Never had that service before! So then we have half her bar staring us down as if we had done something wrong, still talking trash! Unbelievable! A nice either manager or senior employee came over and tried to smooth it over, which i can tell has happened alot, and we tipped Kayla well and left, all the while the bartender scorned and scowling at us as we left. Some ppl are great at customer service( my wife and i know this because we are in it) and some ppl should stay out of it. Our bartender falls into the latter category. BTW, reading previous rewiews, her description came up a few times, so if you are reading this owner of Pasche's- you should listen to your customers cause we still are 'almost always right'. Terrible overall experience due to the bartender and if i see her in there the next time i go, which i will be going back for the food, i will let her and the owner know how poorly her attitude was. Furthermore, i have been going to Pasche's for a long time and have recommended this restaurant to many ppl. Also, this is my...
