I typically avoid leaving negative reviews, but this experience was particularly disappointing.
I visited this Mikko Sushi restaurant for a Father's Day lunch with my family of four. The place is clean and well-lit, with plenty of staff, including many young employees, under the supervision of two owners/managers. They had pretty good reviews on Yelp and other review sites. We wanted to give it a try.
The food was delicious, but the service fell short. The sushi/sashimi/cut-rolls/hand-rolls ordering sheet was confusing. Even their server admitted it. We did our best to fill it out and confirmed our order with a new server, who frequently had to ask others for answers. (That should have been a warning sign)
The server read our order back, and my wife confirmed she wanted two orders of soft shell crab hand rolls. The server even re-confirmed it verbally. However, 15 minutes later, we received cut rolls instead. When I informed another server (as ours had left), he removed the incorrect order from our table. Shortly after, he returned and informed us we had to keep the cut rolls because that's what the order sheet indicated. I explained that the previous server must have marked it incorrectly, but he still placed the unwanted dish back on our table.
Frustrated, I asked to speak with the manager. One of the owners approached us with a confrontational attitude. She offered to refund one of the orders, blaming us for the mistake. I reiterated that the order sheet was confusing and the server had verbally confirmed our order. Despite this, she insisted on their policy that "you get what you ordered."
I explained that it was our first visit, it was Father's Day, and we had relied on the server's verbal confirmation. The manager, clearly annoyed, said, "I don't want to argue with you." I then asked if she could make an exception to ensure a positive experience on Father's Day, emphasizing that I was willing to spend more money as long as the orders were correct. I even asked if she wanted to review the tapes/security cameras to see what was going on previously when we ordered from the departed server.
Reluctantly, she removed the incorrect plates and agreed to bring the correct hand rolls, stating it was an exception. She restated that “I don’t want to argue with you.” Eventually, our hand rolls arrived, but no one apologized for the inconvenience. Not a single sorry for the mishap and faux pas. I left right after finishing the meal with my family.
The focus seemed to be on turning tables and closing tickets, rather than providing good to great customer service. While the food was good, the poor service left a lasting negative impression. I feel ownership and management ought to attend hospitality management and customer service training. Perhaps customer loyalty and brand building is not of importance?
I would have given them four stars, but this experience deserves a lower rating. As Maya Angelou said, “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” This place made me feel like defecation hitting the oscillator on a special day for Dads.
I might consider takeout in the future, but this visit left a bad taste...

From the start it's super busy but they sat us right away at a clean booth and were so fast with getting us waters and settings, they of course were busy and got to it as soon as possible. We were greeted by a lovely server with the most beautiful smile and kind manners. She recommended the avocado and cream cheese roll as i do like sushi sushi but wasnt in the mood to have a full sushi roll. it was amazing I added lemon slices on top as well which was the perfect touch. For an appetizer we got the mixed tempura and it was so light and crunchy. My mother and i love the shrimp in the tempura and asked for a few more pieces as we all wanted to share. My daughter ordered a delicious pork ramen, the server even gave us this chili powder that made the ramen even more delicious as she loves spice and it was perfect. they have a decent selection of alcohol drinks, sakes beers and wines. I got the kiki something It was a crystal blue bottle the same was perfect on top of all the food we ordered and the impeccable service provided we were treated to ice cream , it came fried we absolutely love mikko sushi and will always go here over other sushi restaurants. the staff is lovely, sweet caring and so attentive with everyone. The service was so good despite how busy they were and it's so appreciated that they are all helping and taking care of all the customers that come in. you can tell how much work and effort they put in to make everyone's experience good and make it to where they come back everytime. Shout out to our lovely server with the green eyes, we didn't catch her name but are so delighted that she was our server once again for our third visit. Thank you the managers that checked on us and the bussers that helped when our server was a bit busy. Fridays are busy but always good, thank you thank you thank you mikko sushi. Read moreIf you're thinking about going here, please read. I brought my 62 year old mom and 67 year old dad to this place this morning for Sushi. We sat down, ordered, and they brought the food. My mom has Celiac Disease so she has to bring her own food any place we go so she opened her food container to eat with us (A simple sandwich). .Well the manager decides to tell us that we cannot bring food in to eat just as we start eating. I calmly explain my mom has a disease (celiac) where she has to bring food as her stomach is allergic to WHEAT . .the manager did not care and kept repeating we had to leave if we eat outside food. AT THIS POINT I WAS OUTRAGED. I have NEVER had a place after telling them that my mom has a DISEASE and has to bring her OWN FOOD have someone say we had to leave anyways. THIS WAS HORRIBLE AND SO DISCRIMINATORY. My mom who is 62 BEGAN CRYING at which Point I TOLD THE MANAGER THIS IS ABSURD AND EXCEPTIONS SHOULD BE MADE FOR WOMAN IN HER POSITION WITH DISEASE. I YELLED AT THE MANAGER SO ALL THE CUSTOMERS IN THE PLACE COULD HERE HOW MY POOR MOM WAS BEING KICKED OUT JUST BECAUSE SHE BROUGHT HER OWN FOOD DUE TO DISEASE. WE LEFT IMMEDIATELY. I AM OUTRAGED BY THE INDECENCY OF THIS PLACES MANAGEMENT. I highly recommend avoiding this trash place with trash management as they clearly have a policy that discriminates against people with special circumstances. I will be informing the local newspaper, san diego news, as well as sending a email directly to whomever is the district manager of this location. Again, I am APALED, just APALED . . at how we were treated and how they essentially forced us out of the store because my 62 YEAR OLD MOM WHO HAS CELIAC DISEASE HAD TO BRING HER OWN FOOD. SO UNACCEPTABLE. SO WRONG. Sorry but my words just do what happened this morning justice. I feel so BAD for my mom for what happened here.
