I found this restaurant on-line. I decided to try it out based on the rating here. Upon arriving I went to the counter to review the menu. I noticed the prices were different from the copy of the Cross-Rhodes Rhodes menu listed on this site. When I brought it to the attention of the girl working the counter I was informed, in a very condescending tone, the the menu I was looking at was on the google site. If I wanted to see the correct pricing I would need to go directly to their site. It was apparent that the restaurant is aware of the outdated menu on this site and could update it if they wanted to. It gives prospective customers the wrong impression of their prices. Next I ask the same girl a question about one of their sauces used in one of their dishes. She responds that she doesn't understand my question instead of just explaining the ingredients of the dish. At this point she has made it clear that my questions are nothing less than an annoyance to her. I work in the hospitality industry. Food and Beverage to be precise. Her demeanor and tone would be considered unacceptable in the properties I work for. She definitely lacked tact and her behavior was quite rude. Unfortunately I didn't take the cue and decided to try it out. I sat at a back table. I backed away from my initial choice and decided to order the gyro dinner which came with pita bread, rice, tomatoes and onions along with tzatziki sauce. The portion brought to me was very generous. However I quickly found the gyro meat to be dried out and somewhat of a cardboard consistency. The rice was clumped up and appeared to be old. They put a lot of a sauce on it to moisten it up which tasted like a mixture of balsamic vinegar and lemon. The rice was a basic white rice. The tzatziki sauce was basic and thick lacking a good creamy consistency. When I told the waitress about the meat and asked if she c old bring me some that wasn't dried out she responded quickly noticing how dried out it was. She went up front and asked if she could get a side order for me. I could hear the girl who works the front counter ask if I ate it all. No real concern for the issue at hand. The waitress told her there was quite a bit left and it was indeed dried out and overcooked.
I honestly don't know how this place can get ratings as it does if this is the type of food being served and treats their customers. I did notice the girl at the counter was quite friendly with the food drivers and apparently regular customers.
A very salty, substandard Greek offering as far as this dish was presented. Chicago has many Greek restaurants, both fine restaurants and local haunts such as this with much better food. Unfortunately my desire to eat any Greek food such as this has been ruined for a...
Read moreMy wife wanted some vegetarian mousaka for mothers day so I called in and placed a pick up order. I was told 15-20 minutes for the food to be ready, and it took me over 25 minutes to get there. Upon arriving I was told my order wasnt ready, and one of the guys at the counter was bothering me trying to get me to buy one of their over priced $6 macro brews while I waited. I paid for my order and waited at the counter. Ultimately my order wouldn't be ready until 45 minutes after I placed it.
While standing at the counter I had the displeasure to watch my wife's mousaka be prepared. It was from a frozen tray of food not even prepared there, but rather at Athenian Foods in Melrose Park. And it was re-heated on the same grill they were using to cook burgers, meaning this previously vegetarian dish was no longer vegetarian. I think it is safe to assume any even minorly complex dish which is more involved than heating something on a griddle, is purchased from a food service company like Sysco and is just re-heated to order.
When I got home I began unpack the char-burger I ordered. Neither the burger nor bun was charred, nor do I think they have an actual grill to do so. And it was the saddest burger i've ever seen, worse than even McDonalds fare, just a thin patty of beef in a crushed bun. The bottom bun was also sopping wet due to the white wine they coat their "greek" fries in.
Most curious of all is that I was forced to pay $44 and some change for this Sysco-tier slop. I have no clue how they arrived at this total, as according to their menu prices the Mousaka was $15, the burger was $14, a half order of fries was $4.50 and the minestrone soup was $4, or $37.50 in total. With tax I should have only been charged $41.34 assuming 10.25% sales tax. This business is cash only, and I can only assume it is because they have been kicked off their payment processor due to excessive chargebacks for habitually over billing customers.
So in summary if you want poorly re-heated frozen food or the saddest burgers imaginable, that take twice as long as quoted to be ready, from a restaurant who lies about whether or not dishes conform to your dietary restrictions, go to Cross-Rhodes, if not i'm sure Yelp can help you find a far better Greek diner that wont...
Read moreI visited this restaurant for lunch. I almost left after walking in the door, but the friendly cook saw me looking at the menu and made some good suggestions. So, I figured I'd give this place a try. They gave me my food and drink to go, which I had intended on eating there, but no one ever asked. I sat down at a table anyways with the food. I was then approached by a female who was either a manager or owner of the restaurant. She stated,"If you are going to eat here, I will need to put that food on a plate. This is a restaurant!" I was never asked if I wanted my food to go. This was very rude of this lady. I was simply eating my food as it was given to me. She had walked in after I had and was in street clothes. The last thing I wanted was someone right off the street touching my food to put it on a plate. I also never saw a hostess or waitstaff the entire time I was there. I simply said no, I'll just leave. Perhaps if I had been in my business clothes I would have been treated with more respect. The way in which this lady approached me and what she said to me and the way she said it made me feel like I could not eat there. I will never go back to this place. FYI- There are plenty of other mediocre lunch places in the area where I'm sure one can get much better...
