My husband and I picked Spankey's Pizza for the first time to try it out as it had been recommended by his friend. Upon entering the restaurant I first noticed how hot and stuffy the restaurant was. It was October, and in the evening so maybe they just hadn't had their a/c on, but it was a little uncomfortable. I got used to it though.
We were seated fairly promptly. The atmosphere was good, lots of red like you expect possibly in a pizza joint. Several TV's sprinkled around mostly sports though I believe. I couldn't see a TV from where I sat, no big deal. The waitress was friendly and took our drink order right away. They serve Cocoa Cola products.
I believe there were 2 available bathrooms for either sex to use. They were clean enough and had plenty of supplies in them. I noticed a couple of video game machines back by the restrooms, which is good for the kids. It seemed like a kid friendly space.
We told the server it was our first trip and asked if she had any recommendations. She gave a few that were popular picks and we decided on the Spankey's Supreme.
Not really being familiar with UNA style pizza, we asked about pan pizza or a thicker type, which is sadly not part of their menu. A little disappointing but I kinda knew that going in after Googling UNA style pizza, but still I was hopeful.
The pizza took a fair amount of time to come out considering the place was pretty full - it was a Thursday evening. It was served on a screen on top of a pizza pan. We had plates, but that was it. No silverware, no spatula. I burned my fingers right away pulling a piece off the screen. Mine own fault, I was hungry!
When we got the pizza, I noticed how the crust around the edges looked burnt. Very brown, and cracker like as they just kinda crumbled as you touched them. You can see a little of this on my husband's plate. I didn't get a photo of the pizza when it came out, I forgot. The pizza toppings were generous and high quality, except for the cheese, I would've enjoyed a little more and evenly spread.
I loved the amount of sauce on the pizza, I like a lot of sauce. But back to the horrible crust. The crust wasn't even chewy, it was just kinda a tasteless burnt edge to hold it by. Under the toppings was thin, but better because it wasn't burnt.
All in all the pizza was better than okay (except for the crust), but I think if they offered thicker crusts as an option, or maybe just not have cooked the pizza as long it could've been a 4 or 5 star pizza (5 for a thicker chewy crust - I know it's my own preference).
The menu had a lot of interesting things on it that may appeal to you and they had some gluten free if you need that. Just know that it's thin and brittle crust and maybe that's your thing. It's not ours. They did have tempting looking ice cream signs around, but we didn't try it because we needed to get home.
Service was a little lacking, I don't recall the waitress checking back on us but once and that was later than it should've been in my opinion. We had to ask for a refill on our drink, it wasn't offered. Maybe she was busy or just forgot, but she was friendly so that's a plus nowadays and that goes a long way with me.
We probably won't go back simply because of the crust. The price seemed a little high for the size of the pizza ($20.99 for 12"), but things are so much higher now days, it probably is normal and our total bill is about normal for what we spend for the two of us. As a small biz owner myself, I understand they have to stay in business and respect that.
I did like that they didn't totally gouge us on drink cost, they could've been lower, but at least they weren't over $3 a piece like some places now. Cokes were $2.79 each in October 2024.
We paid and left and was thanked by our server. One thing that didn't sit well with me was on our receipt after we paid, it had suggested additional tips!
Tip rant: I tip based on service, friendliness and promptness. I've seen on the "suggested tip" at the bottom of the receipt - which I totally ignore and base my tip on service not...
Read moreWell, let me start by saying we have had Spankey's pizza twice since moving here from VA a few months ago and it was very good, love the thin crispy crust. However, two weekends ago we were on the way back from vacation in GA. We had drove 12hrs, my husband in the middle seat with a broken leg and elevated the entire way home so he could have surgery in a few days. There was 4 of us and we were hungry and ready for a hot meal. So, I scheduled a pickup online at 8:45pm for a large pizza. We live on the west side (and again, we are new to Evansville) so we had no idea there was another location. We arrived at Spankey's right about 8:45pm, I walked up to the door at the west side location but the door was locked. I looked inside and there were multiple people standing behind the counter but no one came to the door. I then decided to call. I called and the lady said she would come open the door. I continued to stand outside but no one came and then my phone rang. It was the same lady and she said, "oh, you must be at our west side location, your pizza is at our other location in Evansville." 🤦🏼♀️ She also said,"I don't know why the west side location decided to close early today." 🫣 So...I was extremely irritated to have put in a pizza order for pick up after driving 12 hours only to find out that because the location I placed the order under decided to close early, but didn't inform me, rerouted the order to the other location in the area. No one informed me and when I looked at the online order it looks like I initially had the order placed under the downtown location. Which, I didn't. We live off of Red Bank Rd and only knew of the west side location. We had to drive the extra time late at night to just get our pizza. No one informed me via text, phone call or email the locator had changed. What can be done to make this right?
UPDATE to your response: Your lack of concern is appalling. Your pizza is pricey and to have to drive 20 mins out of our way after driving 12+ hrs is insane giving the fact that I did place the order at West Side location. The other location employees literally said, "I don't know why that location closed early tonight." Your employees at the west side location were standing behind the counter but ignored someone outside their door BEFORE the closing time. I understand mistakes happen but you should "make it right.". Your lack to do so has cost you our...
Read moreThis was my first time eating here i live 30 minutes away and it was recommended that this is a great place on the west side. So my kids and I drove into town to get dinner. I got the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pizza for my kids and it was so burnt 🔥the crust was hard and when we tried to take it out of the box it just crumbled my kids are 4 and 5 and have a little bit of sensory issues so they wouldn't eat it! and I had to make them something else! I got the Supreme even though it has pepperoncinis on it they are not usually that spicy but the pizza itself was spicy even with taking those off, the bottom of my pizza was black and burned which tasted very gross I am highly disappointed spending $51 for two pizzas and breadsticks which our breadsticks were all mashed together! I understand the cost of things have went up and I wouldn't mind paying that much if the quality of the food was way better I shouldn't spend $51 and still have to make my kids something else when we went to get pizza to avoid cooking! Definitely not worth my 30 min drive! The best part was the nacho cheese sauce!!! lesson learned I will stick to my una 2, deer head, kipplees, and Sam's for my pizza and stroms! At least my dogs, raccoons, possums, and other wild critters got to enjoy the 51 bucks of pizza! I took pics but no where to upload them! I also did curbside pickup and when I txtd to let them know i was there they said about 7 mins but we were out there more than 7 mins and they didn't seem that crowded! So time🕐 and money wasted...
