TL;DR: Great food (Italian beef 9/10, needed juice; Lasagna 10/10), shop local prices, will be back!
I've heard fantastic things about this place, but I haven't tried it yet. Then they posted on social media about a special - Italian Beef Sandwich. I am a big Italian Beef fan. I have Italian beef shipped to my home twice a year. Needless to say, I LOVE Italian beef. So, did Donnici's live up to the hype? A resounding YES!
First, as you park in their lot, you'll see a beautiful phoenix statue made of metal. It was a really cool piece, and I definitely see it as a future photo-op spot. Inside, you're greeted with an abundance of market items. The layout of the deli feels a bit too direct, but I'll explain that in a bit.
I lined up at the counter, where the family before me was ordering a few sandwiches. Several people came after me, getting sandwiches as well, and about a dozen people were waiting for theirs. Did I mention it's ITALIAN BEEF? From what I saw, it’s a huge hit!
When I placed my order, I also wanted to take a lasagna home for dinner. I ordered that at the counter too, not realizing there was a fridge behind and to the left where I would pick it up. This is where the layout was too direct. Upon entering, the counter is right in front of you. My (limited) experience with places like this is that you order and pay first, then go shopping while you wait. That’s why I ordered the lasagna at the counter instead of picking it up. Here, you place an order, shop, then pay at the end, including your meal. It makes sense, but for someone (like me!) new to the store, it was a bit confusing. But one visit, and you’ll be set for success on your next trip!
I browsed the displays of food and found the lasagna, butter, and other items to take home. The lasagna in the fridge was big enough for 1-2 people, which I thought was perfect — just a small one for my wife, daughter, and me to try. That led to some confusion later.
When my number was called, they rang me up. The ticket said 1/3 lasagna, so I didn't think much of it. 1/3 of a tray, right? They charged me for a sandwich, lasagna, and a piece of cake for $50. I was stunned and confused. I know shopping locally can be pricey, but I thought, "What?!" I didn't want to make a scene because they were busy, the shop was full, and I was excited to try my local Italian beef. I told myself, "Lasagna is off the table in the future! Better have black truffle in it!" So, I headed home.
When I got home, I saw what happened. They had everything packaged before I reached the counter, so I didn't know what was in the bag. The lasagna was a whole tray with a full loaf of bread. That was the confusion! If I had known I was supposed to grab my own, I would have taken the smaller portion. Since I unknowingly ordered it at the counter, I ended up with the family-size portion.
Alright, you’ve stuck with me this far! I ate the sandwich when I got home, and it was divine. 9/10 would recommend. Why not a perfect 10? I LOVE my Italian beef "baptized!" That’s a funny way of saying dunked in au jus. I HATE soggy bread, except in this sandwich. It needs to be so soaked that it’s messy and you need a fork! Unfortunately, they didn't do that here. The meat was tender and moist, but it was a bit too dry for my taste. A heavy splash of juice would make it a perfect 10. They promised to baptize it next time, so I’m pumped for the next time it comes around. More excited than a fat kid waiting for the McRib! And what about the infamous lasagna? 10/10!
Since I accidentally got the whole tray, we swapped out our Italian dinner (risotto for this instead. Probably the best commercial lasagna I’ve ever had. It was incredible. But a word of caution — they use a lot of cheese, so if you’re lactose intolerant (me), grab something else! Not a complaint, just a note, because I usually avoid lasagna for that reason, which is why I just wanted a small piece to try, and that was it.
I'll definitely be back and visit every time the Italian Beef...
Read moreDonnici’s Italian Deli in Excelsior Springs offers a standout experience, especially when it comes to customer service. The staff was incredibly helpful and welcoming, taking time to guide us through the menu and offer thoughtful suggestions since it was our first visit. It’s rare to find that level of attention and genuine care, especially in quick-service settings.
We ordered our food to go, and while the presentation wasn’t fancy meatball subs are naturally a bit messy, it didn’t matter. The flavor more than made up for it. The meatball sub was absolutely phenomenal: hearty, perfectly seasoned, and deeply satisfying. If you’ve only ever had a chain sandwich, you’re in for a revelation. Subway simply doesn’t compare.
In addition to the sandwiches, Donnici’s also offers fresh bakery items, handmade noodles, an impressive soda selection, chips, and ice cream. Everything feels intentional, from the ingredients to the overall atmosphere. Donnici’s is exactly the kind of locally-owned deli every town need, one that cares about quality and people in...
