A wonderful classic diner breakfast experience in a quaint neighborhood!
TL;DR: Excellent food, prompt and pleasant service, very cheap, coffee wasn't great so get OJ if you're picky about coffee.
On our way down for a quick 4-day weekend in the Outer Banks last month, we spent the night near Exmore and found this diner only minutes away from our hotel so we decided to give it a try before we got on the road again the next morning. And boy were we glad we did!
My wife and I both went with the breakfast specials, which for $6 offered 2 eggs any style, a breakfast meat (scrapple, sausage, bacon), toast, and either grits or hash (with an option to add fried onions). I went with the sausage and homemade hash with onions with my eggs and toast. The sausage was homemade and had that wonderful snap when you bit into it! The hash was tasty as well and the fried onions added a nice touch. My wife went with bacon and grits with her meal. The bacon was a generous four pieces and the grits were a unique southern compliment!
The only minor disappointment was the coffee, which was a bit bitter for our tastes, but after a subtotal of less than $20 even with our coffees, it certainly didn't break the bank.
Overall, this was a wonderful experience and anyone passing through the area like we were should stop by and give it a try! We both agreed that we would come back and probably shoot to try lunch or...
Read moreCan't judge a book by its cover, and this is particularly true of this little gem. This is some of the best Chesapeake Bay local dining around Delmarva Penninsula, very reasonably priced. Let's just say, they cook for their customers as if they were their own family! Everything was fresh and generous. The fried oysters were amazingly light and crispy, really the best I have ever had. The clam fritters were different than expected, like two big pancakes, full of fresh clams. The crab cakes were large palm sized, crispy outside and mostly all crab with very little filler to hold them together. There was a large selection of sides, a lot more than one the menu and every one of the sides we got were generous helpinga, freshly made and delicious. We even opted for dessert of coconut Smith Island cake, a multi layered cake with cream cheese icing, moist and again, generous portions. We were just passing by and happened to get there Just before noon. By noon the little diner was packed with a line of people waiting. The locals most likely as this is not typically a spot Travellers would veer off to. I can confidently say that on this day, 10-5-25 we are glad we took the chance and stopped here. This is exactly what we hope to find, off the beaten path and into the best of the...
Read moreAlways good home cooking and sweet folks behind the counter. If anyone has a bad experience here, then I'd have to suspect that the issue was that person, rather than the staff. They know their regulars but are just as nice to new folks, who can quickly become new regulars. :-)
Not sure why those photos posted as rotated, but there's the current menu.
They also post specials on the board.
The Roni Burger is not only delicious, it's a doggone big burger on a monster Kaiser bun. With all the fixings, that is the kind of burger that only a snake could open wide enough to take a bite! LoL
The coffee always seems good and the turnover on a pot there is pretty quick. I rarely see anyone come through the door and not start with a coffee.
There wasn't any good way to take a picture of the Roni Burger so that you could appreciate it's massive size.
No, they don't skimp on the fries... I ate most of those with the Western Omelet, home fries with onions and toast, before devouring the burger.
I opted for the burger over a steak, and there's no doubt that the burger is well worth the price... however, I hadn't quite thought about just how much more food it would be, than the steak. LoL I enjoy a big breakfast, but admittedly, that definitely pushed me...
