Finding good Mexican food in UT has been like trying to find la llorona giving a piggy-back ride to la chupacabra. However, after at least 15 different places, I give Bella's my top choice in UT. As far as the standard fare goes, it's all top notch. The nachos, chile fries, enchiladas, burritos, and chimichangas are awesome. Having to choose your own salsa heat is a UT thing--I think because so many people hate spice, I'm used to places where if you can't handle the heat, you don't deserve to eat there. The 'medium' salsa is like salty tomato sauce, so we had to crank up the heat. The habanero sauce had the bite, but it's too bitter. There's a balance between spice and flavor in salsas, and Bella's doesn't quite hit the spot, but they're close if you mix the medium and habanero salsas. None of the plates were very spicy. The refried beans are thick, which is good to see, but I was disappointed in the lack of Spanish rice (instead, they serve a yellow rice reminiscent of cilantro/jasmine rice). I also like to see places provide sopapillas and honey at the end of the meal. I'm glad to see Bella's makes their own corn and flour tortillas, they had the right thickness and flavor. I have to give a special shout-out, though, to the worst plate I've ever had at any restaurant, and I recommend Bella's remove it from their menu in a fiery, Aztec sacrifice. It's called the Pasta Poblano, described as a generous portion of pasta with a creamy, spicy poblano sauce served with grilled chicken. Putting the chicken aside, the cream, spicy poblano sauce was not spicy, nor do I believe a single poblano pepper made it in the batch. The Kermit-spaghetti must have had a metric ton of cilantro in it, which is not indicated in the menu. For those with the cilantro-tastes-like-gym-socks gene, this item is absolutely repulsive. For those who enjoy the sweet, lemony aroma of cilantro, this meal is an abomination. If Bella's wants a pasta dish, please consider a green chile alfredo sauce over penne/bow ties. Please. This review is for the BEST Mexican food I've had in UT, remember. But please, get rid of the...
Read moreOur family had the worst experience at Bella’s while celebrating my older sister’s birthday back in July. Bella’s is her favorite restaurant, although I don’t know why. My younger sister had called Bella’s weeks in advance and without any issues reserved the banquet room for about 20-22 people @ 6:00. She then sent the invites out. A few days later, she called to add 3 or 4 more people. The man she spoke to the second time, that we assumed to be an owner or manager, quickly became rude and belligerent with her. He went off on a rant for several minutes saying how this reservation should never have been made at 6:00 and that he was now going to have to turn people away because there was no room. Hello?!!! Are we not paying customers too?! She finally had to jump in and ask if this was going to work or not. He angrily agreed and hung up. How was any of this her fault? There were no problems the first time she called to schedule. Maybe there should be better communication with their staff when scheduling large parties.
Once we arrived, our waiter was excellent and most of the staff were very friendly. However, while my sister and I were hanging up a couple birthday banners, a woman came in and scolded us for hanging one of the banners on a wall with tape. We would have been more than happy to move it without being snapped at by this lady.
My sister sent an email to the restaurant shortly after our visit and as of today, she still hasn’t gotten a response.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first unpleasant experience we’ve had at Bella’s. I, along with some other family members have been to Bella’s several times. And each time we visited; the food was not very good. Why did we keep coming back you ask? Because my husband’s employer kept giving him Bella’s gift certificates and it's free food! We also hold on to some hope that each time we go, our food will be better. It never is. I seriously don’t understand why some people...
Read moreBella's has been a family go to for years, we have had our good times and bad with them.
Food they do a good job with a menu that has variety and options for those that have food needs such as vegetarian or gluten free.
Unfortunately sometimes "the kitchen" gets things wrong. We have had times where two of three have had their food served and then recived the last plate of food as the bill is being placed.
We have had servers tell us one thing then the "kitchen" do another, we have had staff (family members of the family owned restarount) that was obviously distressed run around in a panic serving those around us while out right being ignored, we have had staff make fun of what or how we've eaten such as the 7 layer dip.... To my family and I its way better warmed up, that doesn't mean you come to the table of the patron to make fun of them and tell them how weird they are. (This event kept us from coming back for almost a year and we had been going by weekly after the Hot Springs.)
The environment its getting old, dirty and needs a touch up. It works, it really does for now, the tables are clean on top, the rooms are averagely clear of junk, they have a table staff that cleans and clears tables fairly quick. It just needs a deep clean, replace the burnt out lights, touch up the paint, fix the broken decor and get a dress code. Your staff acts afraid to mess up, change your dictatorship direction to Quality and set healthy expectations with a realistic and reasonable schedule that your staff can meet.
All in all, if you go enough you'll either overlook it or you'll start to see it and start going less and less.
The food is mostly home made and has flavor, it's a good place if you're hungry and passing it. But honestly only the salsas are worth a drive out of the way the rest of the order is just because we...
