I recently choose cafe Rue Orleans for a get together with friends. As my wife and I had moved back to the area after living in Houston for years. We wanted to have a nice dinner to catch up.
I made a reservation a couple of weeks in advance. During my first phone call I was told "We don't take reservations!" and was hung up on. Since I was a regular customer when living in NWA I knew that they did take reservations and called back a day later. This time I was met with the answer " We don't take reservations unless it is a part of 6 or more." I let them know that I understood and I had a party of 6 and the reservation was made.
Lets face it, this place is not in a fancy area and doesn't have great parking, but in the past the food and service has been able to make up for those character flaws. I personally had sat down with the owner and we have discussed BBQ, and her reasons for coming to NWA. She was a great host, and has a great personality.
The reservation day had arrived Finally. We where all excited to sit down and have a great meal! The Shrimp appetizer we ordered was great! It was spicy, but not to spicy for the region. Unfortunately, when the salad arrived it looked semi limp and was WAY over dressed. I personally ate two bites and pushed it aside in anticipation for of my meal. I happened to look to my right and watched as my friend pulled multiple hairs out of his salad and ate it. I asked him to send it back, but he said he wasn't worried about it.
Our main dishes all arrived and my alligator dish seemed kind of bland overall. The larger pieces of alligator where underdone, while the smaller where overcooked and chewy. The Jambalaya consisted of overcooked rice, that really tasted like glue with no seasonings whatsoever. I tried my wife's crawfish etouffee and can honestly say i wasn't too disappointed. the flavors where not anywhere near what I've personally had in the past at cafe rue Orleans . Nor anywhere near as good as you can get in New Orleans.
After we paid and left we all decided to go have a drink as a local bar before figuring out what to do with he rest of the evening. After a few hours one of friends let us all know that he had also had hair in his salad AND he even has a piece of hair that was fried and served with his meal!!!! Shortly after he let us all know that he was not feeling well and for the rest of the evening he spent a lot of time in the restroom. Soon after his wife let us know the same time. She also ate off of his plate and spent a lot time in the restroom that evening.
We all decided that we would not be going back to the establishment again. Personally I tried calling the restaurant and asking for the Manager. I was met with a young lady who told me "The owner isn't here. and we don't have a manger" "What can i help you with?" I told her my story and was promptly hung up on.
In short two friends found hair in their food. Two other friends got sick after eating there. A few years ago, this place was worth the price tag, but definitely not anymore. The terrible atmosphere and sub-par service, left all six people in my party wishing we had gone elsewhere. We won't...
Read moreWhen we walked to the restaurant, we were greeted with a not so hardy welcome as we were told to just sit wherever we wanted not being formally welcomed. When we got there, the host promptly put our silverware on the table very hastily and didn’t say much of a word and just kind of throwing the menus down for us to look at. The server was polite, but we didn’t catch his name and it didn’t seem like a very friendly introduction like you would expect from someone who is serving your meal. we got the bourbon chicken, the gator tots , and the crawfish tails and 1/2 of the crawfish was breaded and the other half was served with rice and crawfish tails in a bed of sauce, the breaded crawfish was really way too salty and tough. I feel like they over fried it much like the gator tots just an abundance of salt and too tough. For my partner, he got the bourbon chicken with the jambalaya, and the chicken was much like the crawfish and the gator tots very salty very unappealing When we asked if they could take it back to the kitchen, they said that’s how it is. We can’t fix it, but we’ll take it off your bill so we waited for the alternative to get which was the same platter as Me came exactly like my meal, and then we asked for the ticket and the bourbon chicken was not taken off our bill like was stated by our waiter. we left feeling very dissatisfied and frankly will not be returning. It definitely is not worth the price point in my opinion. But if you like really salty, a bit tougher hardier kind of food then this would probably be really...
Read moreI wish I could give this restaurant more stars than just five, everything was perfect.
The atmosphere, though it looks small is quite nice, almost
similar to a ma and pa diner, the restaurant was clean as a whistle and the view from the window table was breathtaking.
The service was top-notch, our waitress, Sarah was hard-working and diligent, and her attitude made us feel right at home and welcomed. Our chefs Jordan and Jamie prepared the food well and we thoroughly enjoyed the meal.
The food was delicious, we tried the fried green tomatoes, the cajun popcorn, and the Gator tots.
The fried green tomatoes were thin and crispy but packed a punch of flavor, and the tartness of the tomato was well balanced with its fried shell; I've had fried green tomatoes from another restaurant, but the ones from Café Rue Orleans were the most enjoyable.
The Gator tots were hot and chewy, the meat felt like it melted in your mouth.
The cajun popcorn was nice and had a bit of a kick, the crawl fish was a nice addition to the other appetizers we had.
The sauces they served were good with everything, but my favorite sauce was what they served with the fried green tomatoes.
The price is a bit up there, but it is worth it for such delicious food.
I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone, around the area or out of town or state. I know I can't wait to go back.
I took my mom to try the fried green tomatoes a day after her birthday and she enjoyed every bite, the crawl fish reminded her of...
