We were passing through the Carolinas and stopped in Florence to take a break from driving and get some local eats. It appears to have been an old gas station that they converted into an indoor dining room and a bar and deck-like seating area that has no A/C. It wasn't sweltering so we opted for the outdoor area and were pleasantly surprised to find a performer setting up (it was around 5 on a Saturday). Our waitress was attentive and quickly got our drinks along with our appetizer orders and kids orders while we mulled over the menu. My wife ordered the she-crab soup which was very rich and flavorful with a modest amount of crab. We shared an order of fried green tomatoes since they were out of crab fries, I found them to have a nice hard fry leaving a crunchy crust which clung to them pretty well as you ate them. My one son really enjoyed his burgers, he commented how much he liked the crunch of the buns and finished them off. My other son's shrimp were spicy according to him as another reviewer noted it could be residual blackening seasoning on the grill, so I had to scrape all of them clean so he could eat them. My wife decided to have the Oyster Rockefeller po boy , which was tasty but the bacon and cheese overpowered the soft, briny oysters so they just added a smooth texture to the other strong flavors. If you don't want to taste the seafood, you might enjoy it but to us it was a miss...but if you swapped it for chicken it would be tasty. I opted for the grouper which was the catch of the day/chef's special. It was cooked well and the fish was juicy and the blackening seasoning wasn't so aggressive so I was able to taste the fish which flaked into nice segments. Overall the food was good, but not great. The service was very good, our server refreshed our drinks regularly and offered us to-go cups and did a great job. Definitely worth trying, especially if you can stay for a drink or two and enjoy the ambiance. I'd consider stopping here when I pass through again, but then I wouldn't get to try...
Read moreMy wife and I were passing through the area and looking for some seafood options and thus place came up with high reviews so we decided to give it a try. When we first pulled up and looked at the outside I wasn't so sure what to think but once inside those concerns melted away quickly as we were warmly greeted and shown a table immediately in a space that seemed very clean and well presented.
Our server greeted us shortly afterward and quickly explained both the specials as well as the various options available on the menu. Super friendly and helpful.
We had the crab rangoon starter, which came out looking unlike any we had seen before, more like spring rolls than the star or wonton style dumpling, but were delicious nonetheless. I had the shrimp po-boy and my wife had the crab cakes. Both were quite good, my wife particularly enjoyed the crab cakes and the comeback sauce. I would have preferred a little more seasoning on the shrimp in the poboy and a more authentic french bread (some pictures appear to show a more authentic variation than what I was served) however, for the price, it was quite good.
Overall, it was good food paired with absolutely great service all at a good value, and that can be quite a difficult combination to find these days. As we left my wife and I both agreed it was a good lunch and we'd definitely come back when in the area again. Definitely worth a stop to...
Read moreI don't have a much to say about this place as I normally do. Here's why: I had planned on being in the area and wanted to try something different. Being in the mood for seafood, I checked a few places out. The menu for Tubbs was off the chain! My mouth watered the night before and I could not wait to get there.
Unfortunately, dish names can fool you. My party had a little of everything. Crab Rangoon, Bang Bang shrimp, Fried Green Tomatoes, Cheeseburger, and the Fried Shrimp Platter. This was going to be the meal we've longed for and were so excited!
First up were the Fried Green Tomatoes. They were hot, fresh and I have to say the best I've ever had! Next, the Rangoon which claims to have cream cheese but NOT! The ends were burnt and we didn't eat them.
Next the Bang Bang shrimp. They're so big! They were the size of a filet mignon! The inside of each were not completely cooked; disgusting! Took home to my cats.
The cheeseburger would make one think they were eating straight from the animal as it was so tough. How can one mess up a simple hamburger?
The Fried shrimp platter needless to say were as big as the Bang Bang and the breading made them even bigger! The fries were so so but they could do better!
Service? Slow. But, our waitress was new so I do give her a break in all this. We all start somewhere. Bless her for her efforts!
Will I eat there again? Nope....
