We were craving Chinese takeout tonight and I didn't feel like driving to our favorite restaurant, (Fire Wok), at Vilano Beach. I remembered reading that a new family from Chicago took over the China Wok in the Winn-Dixie North Plaza and decided to give them a try. I was honestly a little nervous as this place used to have, IMO, the worst Chinese food in all of St. Augustine. I have given them a few chances over the years and the food was always terrible. Our experience tonight was totally different. When I went in to pick up our order I noticed the restaurant was extremely clean and repainted with murals on the walls, (a huge difference from before as it always appeared dingy). The lady who gave me my my order was also extremely kind. We ordered Hot and Sour Soup,(extra spicy), Egg drop and Wonton Soup, Beef with Broccoli and Szechuan Beef, (extra spicy). What a huge difference from before! Every single thing we ate was delicious...they even made my dishes extra spicy as requested. The included egg rolls were obviously hand made, flavorful and not greasy at all. I'm happy we decided to give this place another try and would recommend it based on tonight's experience.

I ordered chow mein with vegetables. Delivery came and it was soggy vegetables. No noodles. I called door dash and they re-ordered for me so I could get my chow mein. Order comes again and I get the same thing, a container of soggy wet vegetables. At this point, I call the restaurant to ask if they know what chow mein is. The man on the phone tries to tell me that chow mein is a vegetable dish. I have been to many Chinese restaurants and chow mein is a noodle dish at every single one. I even googled to make sure I’m not losing my mind, and it says chow mein is stir fried noodles. I called door dash again and got a full refund. But I wanted to warn everyone not to order the chow mein with vegetables unless you simply want a container of soggy, flavorless vegetables. You would think a restaurant that specializes in Chinese cuisine would know what chow mein is.

Update post Since Covid is gone here and China Wok is still there I have to say I'm still giving it 5 stars and they now have indoor dining. I believe it's new people who took over the place and they are awesome. Very polite and they call you when your orders done also they called me to clarify an order I placed which was really nice Being mothers day weekend I even received a lovely gold rose from them. Food is fantastic as always will post pictures soon !!! They have a TV now in the dining room although it's a small dining area bc it's in a strip mall store front it's kept very clean.

I honestly like this place, i just opened up an insurance agency next to that little jiffy story on lewis speedway and since i am right down the road i just figured that since they were the closest i might as well give them a shot so i ordered a small house lo-mein, a small pork fried rice, and an egg roll. The food was definetly some of the better chinese food ive had. Now its nothing to die for but with all the poisonous GMO(genetically Modified Organism) food, and cancer causing chemical sweetners like aspartame (made from the fecies of e-coli, just google it), and whatever other crap is out there. This place is definetly worth the money, its fresh cooked meals, the food is constantly rotated and fresh, the cooks are decent, the price is cheap even compared to mcdonalds and the food tastes good, the menu is huge so if you ever get tired of something dont stop coming just order something else, i mean come on now you can only eat so much general tso chicken. Since i live alone even though i am or was a chef i cant even cook my own meals for these prices. I could get something different for dinner each night and i dont mean the dinner special or even the lunch special but just getting a small whatever comes by itself in a decent size container and if i wanted rice ill order a small rice that way they dont get all forced mixed togethor and become all nastified as they touch eachother then if i do have left overs they are not all nasty i just heat up whatever and its just as good. its better to get a small whatever and small rice then it is the special not on price but because you can never eat the whole meal by yourself and leftovers is always nasty but getting individual containers is the...
