Obee's Sub Shop — Restaurant in Florida

Normally a really great sandwich shop. I do have one complaint and It's about something that's been pretty consistent lately. I have been going here for years and don't mean this review to be a negative one. For a while now I'm getting sandwiches where the meat is not very cold. Cold cut subs/sandwiches should usually have cold meat on them. I usually get something with turkey on it and the turkey can be slimy at times and not very cold like you think it should be. They cut the meat on a per customer basis and the meat is taken from fridge to slicer many times throughout the day. This is what I suspect the be the cause for this meat issue. The meat comes out of the fridge and is touched soo much that it's warming up and degrading slightly. My opinion is that Obees should start cutting their meat like publix does. They slice it and lay it out on plastic sheets for a full size sub. When the sub is ordered they take it from the fridge in the plastic and unfold it onto the sandwich. Or cut the serving in the plastic based on the sub size ordered. This way the meat is only touched twice and stays in the fridge cold until it goes on the sandwich. I really like Obees but have been not going as much for this reason. Maybe it will change.

This place is falling apart. They changed their supplier for some of their veggies. They are no longer using Mt Olive products at the Englewood store. The new pickles are yuck and most of the peppers (banana and jalapeno are are sliced weird and mostly seeds. They are terrible). A lack of quality in these new items. I went in today and they are understaffed as usual. Everyone running around. Seemed like the only person who knew what she was doing was the girl slicing the meat. This shop has the potential to be one of the best sandwich shops south of Sarasota but it seems as if it just wants to fail. I don't understand. It's like there is an entity holding...

Update update: Gave Obees new owners two more tries and I'm officially converted. Young guy about 30ish with a goatee hooked it up and I had to try again to make sure it wasn't a fluke. No skimp on the toppings, I hope bro doesn't get in trouble for this review. Yeah prices went up but when value goes up also, im onboard. Dunno guys name but you'll probably see me every week or so. Killing it. Update 2025: March 18 New owners, new staff, new price hikes. Two recent visits immediately noticed the negative changes. So I googled and found out new owners came in and apparently fired all the old staff. It changed so dramatically i had to use google to find out what happened. We already miss the mom and pop treatment and only discovered the sale because the drastic drop in quality/quantity.

Old 2014 review: Subs come in 8" and 16" and I dare you to try and finish a 16" gutbuster with all the proper fixings. To give you a idea, if you have been through subway and pay extra for 3x meat this is what you get standard here and they don't skimp on toppings. Full 16" is just 7$! This was my first time ever going to this Obees. I ordered and they were getting my meats and cheese ready where I couldn’t see them and then they moved the sand-which down the line to add vegetables and condiments and as I said pickles I saw the lady grab the items with her bare hands. I couldn’t believe my eyes especially in the times we are in with Covid. I then asked if she had gloves to wear to remake my sand-which as I did not want her bare hands touching my food. An older lady heard me and said this is standard policy to not wear gloves and she can prove it. I then proceeded to explain I’m not okay with it and I would like her name to wear gloves and not to touch my food with her bare hands. The older then told the younger girl to wash her hands and put gloves on and then I watched the lady wash her hands not for the standard 20 seconds but for maybe 5 seconds and then the old lady said can’t you see she’s washing her hands and I said yes I do but to be honest the way she washed them didn’t clean them.
