My wife and I are relatively new to Fort Wayne and we have been in search for a good Chinese takeout place for awhile. Others we've tried have been hit or miss - mostly miss - so we decided on the Golden Wok based on the reviews from others (and it's a short drive from our Foster Park area home).
Apparently, Fort Wayniacs love to give rave reviews for mediocre food.
The Good: Ordering was easy, and received the food quickly. Not much of a wait. Carrying out two entrees in a plastic bag was heavy. Like almost bowling ball heavy.
But this is where the good part of the review ends. I returned home and plated the food.
The Bad: I order the Sesame Chicken and the first thing I noticed was that each piece of chicken was really small. When it hits your mouth, there's some good flavor thanks to the sauce, but you keep chewing, and chewing, and chewing. After it took about five minutes to eat about five bites, I went out to the kitchen to grab a steak knife. Upon further review, each tiny piece had more batter than chicken. And the chicken itself was dried out and rubbery with like a tannish/brown hue to it. The egg roll was a tad greasy, and inside, the vegetables were soggy. Apparently I got a shrimp egg roll, and the shrimp had a weird texture, as if it was shredded and had a funny taste. Hey, at least the rice was good!
Bottom line, I would of been better off going to the grocery store and grabbing some Chinese food from the frozen food section.
I won't be back to...
Read moreA great place for take out. Whether it's working downtown at St Joe and grabbing some shrimp and broccoli for my break at closing time or mid day, mid week with kids in tow and eating there at the tables, the food is always excellent, cooked fresh, with quality ingredients. The hot sour soup is great, sweet and sour chicken lightly battered, crispy and hot with sauce on the side, crab Rangoon cooked perfectly, great eggrolls. House lo mein rocks. The shrimp is firm and fresh in the shrimp dishes, no mushy frozen old ones. Chicken dishes are excellent and the beef in the beef broccoli is thinly sliced steak, tender and flavorful. The lunch and dinner combos are nice with fried rice and crab Rangoon included for under 8 dollars and six at lunch for a generous portion. Shrimp and streak entrees fifty cents added. All portions are generous and I usually have leftovers. I love this place. Never had a bad meal yet. For take away Chinese food there is no better. Don't put in same category as sit down restaurants, it's not...
Read moreClean, friendly carryout chinese restaurant. While most everything appears to be the norm for chinese restaurants, the fried rice rose above my expectations. It didn't have that nasty yellow look typically found at this type of carry-out place, but instead had a nicely colored, brown fried rice with carrots, peas, and bean sprouts. The best I've had in years since my favorite restaurant in my hometown closed. There is a small area for eating within the restaurant if you need to, with nice and clean tables and chairs. I recommend lunch or dinner combination platters for their value if only serving a couple of people. They also had posted specials on the counter, so if you call in, be sure to ask! We had pork lo-mein and my young daughter stuck with her staple, sweet and sour chicken. My lo-mein was delicious, maybe a tad bit greasy, but that's to be expected. Service was excellent and friendly for our first ever experience here. I'll be going...
