My wife and I have been visiting the Union Jack on Magnolia for at least 3 years, especially at Lent time. We have enjoyed the service and the food! Our LAST visit was on 22Dec18 at 6:30pm, and we had the mis-fortune of some bad service and encounter with the cashier who was in-place of the usual Cashier (who was always pleasant and friendly). We waited and waited and waited for our meal, BUT when the place was nearly empty we went to check on our order. When told that it was NEXT, I complained about the long wait. The cashier was too impolite for someone who should have been apologetic to some extent, and so I had then asked him if it was too late to get my money back because we had waited so long. In a very undisciplined manner, he gave me cash back for what I had charged on my VISA xxxxx2893, and he told me that I was ‘personna non-gratis’ at the restaurant. I then asked him for the Manager’s phone number and was given a menu with the telephone number for the restaurant. I told the cashier that I was hoping for a number that would reach the Manager, and followed that wish with the admonishment that I would pay the Manager a visit at some future visit. His response to that was a CHALLENGE to do so because the Manager would be on his side. This future visit has yet to happen, mainly because it would have had other Customers nearby to listen about the 22Dec problem. Subsequently, I decided to resort to an ON-LINE review of the un-acceptable Cashier’s behavior.
My wife and I will NOT be back again to the Union Jack for fish and chips. We had the good fortune of finding another place with better service, better prices and selection, and better seating – the California Fish Grill on Brookhurst and Talbert. We are now more satisfied and feel more strongly that the Owner / Manager needs to be more careful about who he has looking after his store in his absence – his choice in the Cashier is NOT good...
Read moreOkay so this Union Jack's Fish and Chips has been in business or at this location I would say for at least fifty years give or take a year but at least 50 since I grew up in Huntington Beach I was going here as a kid. Fast forward to hear today the fish and chips place in Costa Mesa closed up about two years ago and the owners of that fish and chips Union Jack's Fish and Chips, went and took possession of the location in Huntington Beach or maybe it's considered Fountain Valley I'm not sure however it is the one that's located on Talbert Avenue in this big old shopping center it's kind of catty-corner but it is still every bit as delicious and the owners which I was so happy to see made everything fresh to order and it was just as awesome there may be a little bit more because I remember going there as a kid and it was just the same, but the food was just as delicious as the owners from their location in Costa Mesa that I used to frequent often it was just delicious it was great! So if you really looking for true fish and chips not to mention a variety of true English Fair condiments candies jellies cookies do name it they have it on the Shelf really had to Union Jack's Fish and Chips located on Talbert Avenue and that's all I can say except if you want fish and chips or their shrimp oh my gosh their shrimp are delicious you can't get enough of them and their onion rings the better to use on all their fried foods is just exceptional! Bravo my friends it was good to see you and I will be...

My wife and I made the 30-minute pilgrimage from Torrance, drawn by whispers of a proper chippy. Growing up in Leeds, I still remember the smell of vinegar-soaked paper and the thrill of cheap, golden comfort food — something The King’s Head in Santa Monica does well, but not exactly on a “working man’s lunch” budget.
Union Jack sits tucked in a strip mall (a promising omen for authentic food), and we were greeted by the sight of several folks already tucking in — another good sign. The man behind the counter wasn’t British (no accent detected), but the welcome was warm, so we kept an open mind.
We ordered two rounds of fish and chips: two generous pieces of fish, a mountain of chips, all for under $20. By the end, we were both stuffed and smiling. The chips were spot on — soft inside, crisp outside — and the fish? Perfectly battered, with that glorious crunch that would make any Yorkshire lad nod in approval.
The setup’s simple — plastic cutlery, paper plates, indoor and outdoor seating — but the food does all the talking. And to top it off, they’ve got a little section of British goods for sale. We walked out with biscuits, frozen bangers, and a bottle of Barley Water (they were out of Ribena, sadly).
Verdict: 9/10. Delicious, filling, and authentically humble — just how fish and chips should be. We’ll definitely be back for round two (and maybe to see if Ribena’s...
