I decided to give the 2nd Street Bistro in Monument a try this evening and my expectations were fulfilled. Arriving before six I was given a table promptly even though reservations are highly recommended. The staff was pleasant and prompt in seating me.
The decor is light and airy and well-lighted with plenty of fine art on the walls.
I ordered the wild salmon and asked for some bread and butter because they do not offer a dinner salad. The bread was brought promptly and the only criticism is that the butter needs to be warmed slightly so it's not rock-hard.
I also ordered a glass of the Robert Strong Merlot, which was most excellent. I'm not a wine snob so I won't bother with the adjectives, but it was smooth and not too tart.
The salmon arrived in due time and was topped with an artfully-applied "seafood cream...almost a creme fresh" topping that was browned to perfection. Opting out of the veg I got mashed potatoes as the side, and although they appeared a bit lonely on the plate as soon as I asked for some gravy or butter, a tasty cup of brown gravy was immediately provided by the proprietor himself.
The salmon was cooked to perfection and was hot and moist and the seafood cream topping enhanced the flavor of the fish remarkably.
For dessert I had cheesecake, which while good suffered slightly from a slightly too-thick crust and would have benefited from a fruit compote of some sort to enhance the flavor.
After a second glass of the Strong Merlot I paid the +50 bill and bade them goodnight.
Although pricey, I highly recommend the 2nd Street Bistro for up-scale dining in Monument and it's worth the drive from Colorado Springs for the ambiance and quiet character combined with prompt, friendly service...
Read moreWe were really excited to try this restaurant. It started off good. Comfortable, friendly atmosphere. When ordering my food I had expressed my sensitivity to dairy to the waitress serving us. I had already had a coffee and baileys and didn’t want to push my luck by having anymore dairy in my meal. So she recommended the stuffed portobello mushrooms which were with goat cheese instead. I had asked her what was in the Bananas Rickster. She mentioned “bananas, cooked down with rum and brown sugar and all that good stuff”. She never mentioned it being on top of ice cream or a waffle. The person with me is allergic to gluten and we would have never ordered the bananas rickster had we of known it was dairy and gluten! We had to wait for dessert as the manager had to run to the store to get bananas. After she had given us our dessert I had mentioned to her I didn’t know there was ice cream, you never mentioned it when I asked you what was in it. Before I could say anything else she had cut me off and said, “ I may have said it quickly and you didn’t hear.” That was an extremely rude response! All the while, one of the investors “Jay” had friends coming to dine, Alison and James. So each waitress was going to the tables asking everyone their names and trying to figure out who the investors friends were. Extremely tacky! The stuffed mushrooms were delicious, however the side dishes had no flavor. I would not recommend...
Read moreParty of 4, WE all were disappointed with food, service, and outside appearance when we went for lunch the other day. Bland food (Lobster Bisque bland?! Yes!), items on menu not being available, vegan lasagna without ANY noodles, and "Slaw" as the only side available with food, even with the Vegan Lasagna. As for the full details: My wife and friends pointed out that the outside of the restaurant was a mess with trash strewn about the courtyard. As for the food, 3 of us ordered the the lobster bisque and ALL of us found it incredibly bland. I NEVER add salt to my soup but in this case I thought it might help. It didn't. I decided to stop eating the Bisque and asked the waitress if I could get a cup of the broccoli cheddar soup. She/they were kind enough to do that but the broccoli cheddar soup wasn't much better. The sandwich I had was OK but my wife was disappointed that her vegan lasagna didn't have any noodles in it, just sauce and vegetables. The menu also had a loaded baked potato on it ("Big-Ass Tater") - in TWO places. Essentially the same dish but with different names. Huh? Didn't matter, they didn't have ANY potatoes. Lastly, when we left the restaurant we didn't hear ONE word from the waitress or host such as, "Have a nice day, hope everything was OK, hope you'll come...
