My boyfriend and I were in Freeport a week ago (Saturday) to find a rare shower part. We asked the girl at Girard's where we could find good flour tortillas and she recommended AR's Cafe. We ordered a dozen flour tortillas, 1lb of barbacoa and 10oz of salsa verde. The tortillas were very good and huge; the barbacoa isn't at all greasy and has an amazing flavor that makes you say, "Mmmmm, this is soooo damn good!", while actively chewing and the salsa verde has an amazing flavor, perfect consistency and such a kick that will leave you sweating if you use too much, yet you won't want to take a drink for fear of diluting the flavor. Delicious!! We went back on Tuesday (from Sweeny) and got 2 dozen flour tortillas, 2lbs of barbacoa another 10oz of salsa verde. I should also mention that the people are friendly, they provide an adequate amount of lime, cilantro and onion, and the price is right. It was an equally wonderful experience. Today I made the third trip in a week's time to get more of everything, plus some menudo and was disappointed to find out they were closed. We tried another place that had 5 stars on Google reviews that was recommended by another local but it didn't come anywhere close to comparison. Needless to say I imagine there will be many more 35-minute trips to a town we never go to so that we can indulge in the amazing flavor of what AR's Cafe...
Read moreThis has to be the worst cafe in Freeport or the surrounding areas. Food: The Chicken Fried Steak I ordered was actually 4-5 steak fingers that were so over cooked I couldn't cut them with the knife that was provided. The Mashed potatoes were runny, the green beans looked like leftovers from the day before and the gravy was so watered down it looked like non-fat milk (with the same flavor). The french fries were store bought crinkle cut fries that were over done and under done. Some of the fries we still frozen in the center. The only thing that was edible was the toast. But it was good toast. Decor: Table clothes were dirty and torn with flies circling around the table. The chairs were stained and the walls and counters did not appear to have exer been washed down. Service: Poor-Fair is to high for the surliness and indifference I experienced from my "wait staff". In short - Save your time and your appetite and eat out of dumpster. It will be cheaper and probably healthier for...
Read moreLocated in Freeport,Tx. One of the best Mexican food restaurants around on the Tx Gulf coast. Family owned and run for years. They're well known for their Hippo Breakfast tacos. They're huge & loaded down with your choices. The flour tortillas are fresh, handmade and always served hot. salsa handmade also. Coffee and casual crowds for breakfast and lunch only. Quick and courteous wait staff. As far as I know, mostly family also. My husband loves the Barbacoa plate while I get the Carne Gusaido...meat so tender. They have everything from Chicken Fried steak to 4 kinds of Enchiladas. All very reasonably priced. The dining atea kept clean and tables cleared fast. They have to be because the tables are always full and the food is delicious. I'm lucky as I live close enough to walk to them but then I'd be too full...
