Super excited to try this place since I love the breakfast sandwiches in Taiwan which are so simple but absolutely delicious. Food/Taste/Flavor: 3/5 - missed our order of Original Taiwanese Pancake (TW Crepe w/ egg) even though we reminded him to add this again when he read the order back to us :(((
Togo House Special Sandwich (ham, egg, and cucumber) and Togo Signature Sandwich (pork, ham, egg, and cucumber) 5/5 - are pretty yummy overall. The bread seems like a milk bread that is soft and fluffy with a slight sweetness to it. Fairly conservative with the mayonnaise and cucumber. The pork is very flavorful compared to everything else so it seems overly salty in comparison
Daikon (Turnip) Cake 3/5 - is not fried as much as we would like and it's a tiny portion. Appreciate that the pieces were cut into bite sized and could actually be dipped into the sauce container
Black Pepper Teppan Noodle 1/5 - was over cooked. Sauce was nice but the texture of the noodles ruined the overall dish for us. Not sure if it's because we ordered to go but definitely recommend avoiding this dish
Milk Tea with quarter sugar is good. You can taste the tea more but my sister says it tastes really water down because it's not sweet
Ambience: N/A - ordered food to go. Crazy plaza for parking and the shop was super busy
Service: N/A - attempted to order online through our phone but it had an error on checkout process. Then tried to order online from a computer and when checking out, it says that the online order option is closed. So called in our order through the phone. Not sure if language issue but he had a little difficulty understanding or hearing us
Value for price: 3/5 - only get the sandwiches and avoid everything else!
There seems to be slightly different names for these dishes online vs in the store so not sure if that's causing some confusion too. Daikon vs turnip cake. Taiwanese...
Read moreTLDR: Taiwanese breakfast Food find worth the drive
I’ve driven throughout the Bay Area in search of great food finds but I’ll be the first to admit that among the most frustrating searches has definitely been Taiwanese food in the Bay Area, especially Taiwanese breakfast.
That’s why it was so nice to see an article in the SF Chronicle about Taiwanese food openings locally (ty to Ms. Kadvany for that article (with a spotlight on Chiang Beef Noodle) and the key link to the KQED feature on Taiwanese food in May of this year).
Having crossed off Taiwan from my travel bucket list in 2018, those articles made me optimistic about Taiwanese food locally.
I woke up early today, drove 30 minutes to the East Bay and checked out Cafe Mei in Fremont (also featured in that SF Chronicle article)
After a first opening day met by overwhelming demand, the soft opening reset and just reopened this week on August 12 with more staff and much more preparation.
We found an efficient check-in and all our items ready in 5 minutes.
Verdict? Absolutely legit and the first time I’ve had these flavors locally. The standouts are the meticulously prepared sandwich with perfect bread, beautiful soft boiled egg fillings and just the right amount of mayo. If the owner says this is 90% of the original Cafe Mei flavor in Taiwan, I need to put Cafe Mei on my list for my next trip to Taiwan. The taro pork sung sandwich is also delicious and the original Taiwanese pancake with egg and scallion is a hint of the more familiar Taiwanese breakfast entrees more people are probably familiar. Taiwanese milk tea and black tea are also on point and just taste right.
If we had shop with fan tuan (sticky rice roll) and sweet and salty soy bean, I’d consider the Taiwanese food scene 1000% better, even if I have to drive to East Bay.
Thank you Cafe Mei for persisting and bringing your Taiwanese eats to...
