I eat here every time I come to the peninsula and it's always been great. This weekend I was excited to bring 2 friends after a 12 hour stay on the beach. It was a VERY disappointing visit to the restaurant this time! We arrived at 9:55am on Saturday morning. We were told to pick our seat and our drink order was taken right away. Our food order was placed at 10:01. It was 10:30 when we got a basket of chips and some salsa. At 10:42, after watching several other tables be seated and served, another customer came over to us and asked why they had come, eaten and were now leaving, and we still hadn't gotten food yet. Within a minute of that, one of the other servers came over to us and said "y'all still haven't got your food?" We sat there until 11:05 when I went up to the bar where our server and 2 others were standing and asked if our order ever actually made it to the kitchen. I was told "yes, I'll go check on it". It was another 8 minutes after that when we actually got our food. Of the 3 meals, one was not the right order. It was at that point we were also told that they were out of the menudo we ordered. I would also like to mention that the whole time we were there, the busser was cleaning tables, but everything he removed from the dirty tables, was just moved to another table, next to us and another couple seated to eat. It was less than appetizing... Did y'all not have a garbage bin and sink for the trash and dishes? (Picture included with review) What upset us the most was not the wait, the pile of nasty dishes right next to us, or watching several groups come, eat and leave, while we sat waiting... It was the way the manager lady tried to handle the situation. She acted like nothing wrong had happened. She also never apologized for the ridiculous wait. Our server was even embarrassed about the way she tried to handle it. It was a VERY disappointing visit and a very BAD first impression on the 2 friends I brought to experience what is normally a great meal! Get it together, y'all.
I'll give it another chance on my next visit to Bolivar....
Read moreI'll start with the fact that the waitstaff was awesome. Our party had a new employee serving us, it was only his fourth shift, and he was great. He kept on top of everything as best he could, and his trainer was great and made sure to check on us to see how he was doing.
The food, on the other hand, was terrible. The only two things that anyone at the table actually liked was the salsa and my kids liked their chicken strips. After that the most positive feedback was that it was "just okay". The tortilla chips had no salt and were overcooked to a crispiness that rivals dried rice cakes. Next, the rice was overcooked to the point of being almost mushy. The refried beans weren't, they had the taste and texture of someone boiling a pot of pintos, mashing them somewhat, and then putting it directly on the plate. Myself and one other had the seafood burritos, of which mine consisted of only shrimp that was salted and spiced to inedibility (I could literally only stomach maybe 1/4 of it before I gave up) and shredded cheese that makes Kraft singles look gourmet. What makes this burrito even better at a $16 price point was the gift that came with it. The shrimp was not cooked properly and gave both of us who ate it a viral intestinal infection, one of us had to go to the ER because they could not retain any food in either direction. One of us had the nachos, and other than the same shredded cheese there was a melted cheese that appeared to be unaltered (not spiced, no rotel, nothing) velveeta. The last of our party got sour cream enchiladas, and their review was the best of the main courses at "just okay."
I am aghast that a restaurant serving Mexican food so close to the border was so terrible, its like no one in the kitchen has ever actually had Mexican food before.. And the icing on the cake is the the owner was the one in the kitchen sending this food out to...
Read moreGo to Jose’s Cantina down the street. Avoid this place at all cost. We arrived here early on Saturday. Had breakfast and everything was great. When our friends arrived we decided to go here for lunch the following Wednesday. Tried to order my son chicken strips with rice instead of fries. They couldn’t do that without a $3 charge for the rice. Tried to order fajitas with refried beans and charro beans, I could order double beans instead of rice but not refried beans and charro beans. The guacamole is awful. The queso was already hard when it arrived at the table. Our friend ordered nachos and it was a bunch of chips with a little cheese on top. My son literally spit his quesadillas out on his plate. The best was when our waitress informed us this was a cook decision. They were really picky on what they would do. The logic of this makes zero since. Why would anyone want to be a waiter here knowing they are dealing with cooks that won’t do basic substitutions that every other Mexican place in Texas will- we are talking rice and beans? What’s even better is they have a cook tip jar at the cash register. It’s laughable. They tell you the total of your bill without giving you a receipt to look at. Auto 20% gratuity added. Drive down and go to Jose’s cantina. The food was amazing there, the service was amazing there. Even with all of this the manager/owner of G’s just sat behind the bar. There were maybe 3 tables seated. Not worth the money, time, etc. if all of this wasn’t bad enough the restaurant smells. To Colter the waiter we had for Saturday breakfast- go work somewhere else, you will be happier and make better tips than here. You...
