Jim 'N Nick's Bar-B-Q — Restaurant in Gardendale

I came into the store to places to go order for 2 side orders of corn on the cob and an order of cheese biscuits. The guy who initially took my order & payment was very helpful & polite. There was another girl working the to go orders. The man had told me that my order would only be a minute. I waited. And I waited. The man came back out & told another lady that her order would be up next, & then asked me if “she” had already gotten mine. I said no, & he said, “hold on one second….” & vanished. I held. And held. No one at the bar/to-go area, a couple of servers standing near the kitchen, but they didn’t acknowledge anyone. “She” came out of the kitchen with a bag, walked past me, & handed a lady behind me her bag. She vanished again. I waited. She came back out, went to the computer, didn’t acknowledge me at all. I finally asked her if she had an idea of how much longer my order would be, explaining that it was only for a couple side orders & some cheese biscuits. She didn’t say anything, just walked back to the kitchen. I waited. She eventually came back out & told me that they were working on mine now. Okay….I did some more waiting. She vanished again. Never saw the man again. Another 5 or so more minutes, here she comes, and while walking past me says, “She’s coming with your order.” A minute later, here comes another “she”, & hands me a bag. Not a, “Bye!”, “Have a good night!”, or better, “Sorry for your ridiculous wait!” What’s even more unnerving is that “She” #1 had this aloofness to her attitude almost as if was somehow bothering or inconveniencing her. Jim 'N Nick's in Gardendale provides consistently good food and service. I could smell the BBQ from the parking lot. This is real BBQ that is served here.

My favorite dish here is usually the barbeque pork sandwich with corn on the cob. Other sides are available—probably french fries are the most popular—but the corn always sounds like a healthier alternative.

On our latest visit, my dining companion ordered a pig in the garden salad. It had a large serving of BBQ pork on top of the salad (see photo). The lettuce and other ingredients were very fresh.

I had my favorite dish--the BBQ pork sandwich and corn on the cob. The pork was tender and moist. I added a little more of the BBQ sauce and was pleasantly surprised that the bun had a different flavor than in the past. It was very fresh and apparently a potato bun. At any rate, the sandwich was excellent.

Stephanie was our server. She was quiet but did a good job. She kept the iced tea glasses refilled and quickly provide a carry-out box for the remainder of the salad.

For those with a larger appetite, I recommend banana pudding. What BBQ restaurant worthy of the genre does not have banana pudding. It is a standard offering and the pudding here has always been excellent.

The ambiance is relaxing. Beer, wine, and drinks are available. The wine list is limited. And, while I like a nice glass of full-bodied cabernet, accompanying a BBQ pork sandwich does not seem quite right. The iced tea also has...

I wanted to love it here and put 5 stars all the way across. Our server was great! She was attentive and checked in on us the entire time. Zero complaints with her. Now I’ll share the rest of the visit . My husband and I both had food floating in our tea glasses and food or something hardened inside the glasses. I also got a mixed drink that had something (looked like it could’ve been black mold) frozen in the ice cube! Then I started looked in my mixed drink more closely and there was black stuff all inside the bottom of it. I will attach pics at the end. (Unfortunately I didn’t take pics of the tea glasses but once I noticed other stuff I did) We let our server know about the tea and she got us new ones in Togo cups but the discovery of the ice etc was a little bit after her bringing new teas and I felt like it was so much to have to keep saying to her something was wrong so I felt like a review would be better. Used the restroom and the toilets are disgusting, they’re clearly not being cleaned as they should. You can see it as soon as you walk into the stall. And around the toilet at the base/floor looked pretty gross. You might want to retrain the dishwasher people and do a deep clean on your ice maker and restrooms.
