Displeased with the manager Erin. Poor Customer Service.
I have been to Hook Line and Schooner at least three times now. Although this restaurant is a good drive for me, I will often visit this establishment when I’m in the area because I absolutely love their charbroiled oysters. My best friend and I often come just for the oysters and will often order several orders.
I must say that this time, we both were sadly disappointed to find that the HS charbroiled oysters that we ordered were so tiny that you could barely see or taste them. Even the guy that brought them to our table agreed that they were extremely small and initially said that the manager would likely give us a couple of more oysters to make up for the size. If anything, we should have been pre-warned that the oysters were smaller than normal so that we can decide if we wanted to pay full price or just not order them at all upfront.
Well, when we mentioned it to our server Darrin, who was great by the way, he was advised by the manager, Erin, to advise us that the oysters were priced at market price and that she could not do anything outside of take them back and remove them from our check. First of all, the oysters were and are always listed as 9.95 per order of six on the menu (not market price). Second of all, we have always gotten nice size oysters when coming here. If anything, in the past if the oysters were running small, they would add on 1-2 more to compensate.
We asked to speak with Erin, again thinking as the manager, she would offer us a better option. We really wanted to enjoy several orders of oysters and were willing to pay for them. She, unfortunately, was not friendly at all and was rather quick and blunt about it stating that the only option was to take the oysters back and not charge us for them. Very disappointing as we just wanted her to be fair.
Needless to say, we went ahead and just paid for the serving, however it was not our usual experience. I went ahead and ordered the whole flounder as my main entrée with a cup of she crab soup. The flounder was good, just needed a little more seasoning (7). The she crab soup was excellent (9)!
My friend ordered catfish, shrimp, and a lobster tail. She enjoyed her food as well. Our server was great overall! So disappointed in the manager, Erin, however! She really put a bad taste in my mouth and actually cost the restaurant money vs saving as we normally order at least 2-3 servings of oysters. Last time we sat at the bar and ordered at least 3 dozen or more. Now I question if coming back is worth the drive. She was not friendly at all nor did she come back by to check on us! Please be careful to ask what the size of the oysters look like at this restaurant before ordering to avoid the disappointment that we got! Normally they...
Read moreA gem of a place. I was looking for a place to celebrate my birthday with a good meal. When looking for places near me, HL&S came up. I had heard of it, but had never been. I hadn't decided on where I was going until a friend was celebrating a score of 100 where she worked. It turned out to be HL&S. It then was a no brainer and I called to make a reservation, and was surprised when Pam, whom I have known for a long time, but hadn't talked to in a while, answered the phone. We spend a minute catching up and she took down my reservation then said she was going to make sure Nicole would be taking care of us. The good vibes kept coming. Not only did Pam work there but her daughter and her daughter's daughter and her MIL. That spoke volumes of this was not only going to be a great place to have a meal but also a place that cares and is family oriented. Coming into the restaurant, we were greeted with a friendly hello and shown to our seats. Nicole, a long time family friend, who was working that night, was there to take the best care of myself and my boyfriend. The food was fresh and delicious. We started out with some crab dip that was creamy and amazing. Then moved onto a dozen fresh oysters. Taking a short breather, we moved onto entrees. I had steamed snow crab. The meat was tender and came out of the shell with little to no effort. I appreciated that I was given gloves to keep my fingers from getting mushy. I had never been given gloves before, it;s the little things. My boyfriend ordered the HLS salad with blackened shrimp. He ate every bit of it and loved it. To finish the meal we split a creamy, citrusy key lime pie. The wonderful service, the fresh tasty food made for a great birthday meal. I usually take pictures of all the deliciousness, but decided to be in the moment. I will take pictures and post the next time when we return. Thank you to Pam and Nicole for the added surprise of talking and seeing you. Also a shout out to Nick, one of the owners who was there and I met. You have a great crew of folks making delicious food and creating a great...
Read moreI found this restaurant through a search for great seafood and from the the menu and online reviews (4.1 stars) I was excited. Walking into the establishment was underwhelming, on a Sunday evening they were noticeably slow and we waited to be acknowledged by staff. Once seated there was no introduction to the restaurant, we were given our water and left until we prompted to ask questions. We started with the HLS oysters, and they weren’t terrible but not amazing. My main course was the fish of the day; Red Snapper blackened with citrus butter, broccoli and Brussels sprouts. For starters the portion of the fish was minimal, the fillet was very small and didn’t blow you away with flavor or freshness, the broccoli was a basic steam without seasoning and Brussels were terrible, they were raw and had a chemical favor (we sent them back). My boyfriend got fried oysters and they were fried until unrecognizable. As a pescataran and someone who frequents restaurants regularly and enjoys a good dining experience, this restaurant is subpar at best. The prices are of white linen, candle lit caliber however the quality doesn’t stand up. I gave this HLS a 1 star rating because this restaurant is advertised to be in a class they don’t belong. The Snapper was $25 and Fried Oysters were $20 both were of far less value. To be fair the Snapper was worth $13-15 and oysters $11-12, I’ve had better for less. Their Online ratings as well as inflated prices are very deceptive and lead you to believe you will receive a level of experience that they can’t offer. I...
