Sigh... I give up on eating out. Customer service is non existent nowadays. To start off the Ma'Kayla has the world's worst attitude and it got worst when I didn't add a tip. I attempted to order the smothered pork chops and before I could even get the words out all the way she interrupted saying they don't have pork chops. My daughter decided on the chicken and Makayla just walked away while she was ordering. She went to check the availability but she didn't say anything just left. When she came back she said "you still want the chicken". Generally I would've cancelled my order or not even proceed with it after she yelled at my daughter but the food looked really good so I ignored her. Big mistake, I should've kept my close to $40. The food here all was flavorless except the green beans and corn which seemed to be seasoned with only black pepper. I got the turkey wing over rice plate with collards and green beans with a dice of chocolate cake. My daughter got the fried chicken wing plate with fries and corn with a slice of strawberry cake. How do you skip seasoning fried chicken and putting seasoning or salt on the French fries. Even the cake was tasteless except small hints of flavor in the icing ( we both only ate a 1/4 of each came). Like how?? Who is cooking at this location. I almost got us tested for COVID-19 if it weren't for the candy we ate afterwards that we could taste. I honestly considered giving them another chance because it could've been an off day but according to the other reviews it's business as usual. Thanks for solidifying the idea that I should...
Read moreThis is a first experience review; however, first experience should be your best experience, should there a return worth of your time and money. Having said that, I'll begin by saying that overall I was not disappointed, but not overwhelmed. I am African American and consider myself to be inherently familiar with soul food cooking. I had the smothered pork chops (2), mack & cheese, and collard greens. The true test of a soul food restaurant lies within their ability to make macaroni and cheese from scratch and collard greens (fresh). I'll not waste time on seasoning, because for me it was pleasantly seasoned well. The pork chops were tender, unassisted with a knife. The macaroni and cheese was also equally pleasing, with just the correct amount of cheese. However, I will spend a little time critiquing the collard greens. I am somewhat a snob regarding fine collard green taste and presentation. These collards had a bit of a bitter taste. They were a bit firm (i.e. like an aldente), but okay. Where they lost major cool points is, they had way too many stems in the collards. Good collards should contain just the leaves. I believe these collards came from a bag that came from the grocery store. I have cooked grocery store, bagged collards and they always have way too many stems. I offer this review as a suggestion to the restaurant to better filter their collards if purchased from the grocery store. Overall, I had a very positive experience. I would like to sample other menu items, before I render another opinion. I look forward to another visit. Thanks...
Read moreTucked just off the highway with a small parking lot out front, this spot is easy to get toâeven if you miss the turn like I did. I stopped nearby for something else, got a recommendation from a local, and decided to give it a try. Iâm glad I did. The building has great curb appealâfresh paint, clean signage, and a tidy appearance that pulls you in.
Inside, it's a casual, counter-service setup with a clean, open dining room and a few booths around the edge. The vibe is informal and welcoming. The food is served cafeteria-style: you pick your meat and sides, and they plate it for you. While the default seems to be takeout, you're welcome to sit and eat there.
I went with the baked chicken, which comes with rice and gravy and includes two sides. I picked cabbage and mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was exactly what you'd hope forâcheesy, creamy, smooth, and flavorful with satisfying cheese pulls in every bite. The cabbage was cooked just rightâtender but not mushyâwith great seasoning.
The rice and gravy had deep, balanced flavor without being too salty or heavy. In fact, nothing was oversalted, which is a rare and welcome surprise in a small spot like this. The meal also came with a small cornbread muffin that hit the spot.
Dessert options included hot cobblers like apple and peach, along with a tempting variety of cake slicesâall of which looked fantastic.
