The menu items can leave a bit to be desired. It's hit or miss depending on the day. Sometimes delicious but at others a waste of money. For example, a Carne toast with egg that was unpalatable. Unripe slices of tough tomatoes on breakfast or bagle sandwiches not enjoyable. Very thin layer of cream cheese and produce that have long since seen their peak or were poorly grown and produced, resulting in somewhat unpalatable food.

Too many times have had to toss food. Sometimes everything is soggy and yucky. The coffee at times can be bitter.

But then on a good day, everything taste great and yummy. Why?

Overall too much inconsistency and lack of care in delivering delicious food and coffees. Need some changes.

Hope this shop gets back to being special as UT once was!

Friendly staff and great service.

....

Am knocking them down one point today, new staff and for some reason twice now have had trouble with their coffee drinks, not sure why.. subpar twice in a row.. Also was sure their lox deluxe had something extra on it, but seems I'm wrong? Couldn't find a menu so I could check that.

Hope will be back up to 5 stars a bit later.

This place changes from time to time but overall is excellent. The staff is kindly, attentive and they make sure you have what you want, if not they will correct it.

My standby place for their tomato, avocado toast which is the best I've had anywhere. Also love their bagel sandwiches and spreads, actually everything is good here.

My one complaint is that at times their expresso makes me wonder just how low the caffeine content is. Tastes lovely but I want it to...

Two of us came here for a nighttime chat between 7 and 8:00 closing time. There were still several customers at tables who looked mostly like they were students working on laptops.

The woman at the register was friendly and welcoming and patient as we made our selections (chai and an Oreo frap-type drink). After paying we sat at one of the plentiful tables in the spacious dining area, which could benefit from a couch or other form of cozier seating than the current tables and chairs. Other than that it’s a nice setup.

I wasn’t crazy about the chai-it tasted a bit harsh and wasn’t hot-more very warm. I should’ve asked for a reheat and I’m sure it would’ve made it yummier or maybe I’m just a picky person-lol. My friend greatly enjoyed her Oreo drink however and it disappeared before I could even ask for a taste.

At 8:00 we were so deep in conversation that we didn’t realize almost everyone else had cleared out for closing. And yet, the staffperson did not hustle us out as she was busy clearing up in back. She did, however, warmly bid us a good evening. Really good service here, and next time I’ll have tea or coffee or one of those tall Frappuccino...

Website advertised a drive through option for picking up coffee, but when I showed up to get my order there was no drive through and the staff was unable to bring my coffee out to me (so please be aware of this when picking up an online order- especially if due to potential Covid contact concerns you don’t want to go inside a restaurant).

That being said, even though the above issue did get in the way of me getting the coffee I ordered, the owner was very sweet in terms of apologizing for the miscommunication and refunding me for my order when I wasn’t able to go into the store to pick it up. I really appreciated the high level of understanding and customer service after this mishap. In addition to their amazing coffee and pastries, I really admire that the owner is so empathetic, and will continue to support this wonderful business...

I was so happy to see the Java was serving food at tables again! And the quality of the product is still top notch. The problem was the cross contamination way the UCSB graduate made the lox sandwich. As she touched caper containers, then grabbed a tomato from the visibly dirty cutting board ,grabs the knife ,puts the cream cheese, then grabs these wilted cut onion slices from a plastic container, that the employee has touched several times that day ,and it’s been open the entire time .See ? Gloves or not .Its the ORDER in which you make the sandwich which keeps from making a customer sick ,after paying $14 plus the appropriate tip ,it’s only fair you have your employees who have graduated from culinary school to please see one episode of Bar Rescue before you kill someone, like my Mama.

I’ve been here a few times, generally for black coffee. I love the variety they have of this and the discount they offer for bringing your own container. I also love the atmosphere. On Wednesday, I asked for two, small dirty chais and a bagel + avo + cc. The chais were $4.95 each for a “small”— 8 ounces. I’m all about supporting local businesses because local is better! But unfortunately this was disappointing chai because it tasted like the ingredient ratio was off. I’ve had a dirty chai here before so it was just a confusing experience taste buds wise. Overall, I would go back, but not for a dirty chai. Also, you should try their bagel + tomato + lemon pepper + cream cheese + onion + cheese. Delish.
