UPDATE, January 2015. I have eaten here several times since my original review from July 2013. I just ate lunch here again in January of 2015 and it was better than ever. The chips and salsa were especially good with warm chips and salsa of a perfect taste and consistency (I don't like chunky salsa). I think I got the same combo plate mentioned below and my previous review stands. It was delicious. I didn't notice the prices increasing but maybe they did. I don't recall the prices being out of line. The service was good and friendly.
I ate lunch here in late July 2013. I love Tex-Mex and have been eating it all of my life, regularly. People have different expectations about how Tex-Mex should taste or be served so your taste buds may differ from mine. When travelling between Houston and San Antonio, I like to drive Hwy 90. Lucky for me I hit Gonzales around lunch time. For me, Mr. Taco is the best Tex-Mex I can ever remember eating. I got a Combo-Platter (I don;t remember the name) but it came with the usual fare of cheese enchiladas, tamale, rice, beans, taco, guacamole with sweet tea. The outstanding part of the meal was the chili-gravy. As the chili-gravy permeates nearly the whole plate, it can make or break a meal - and theirs made the meal. Every bite of my meal was delicious. The tamale and enchiladas were the highlight. The rice was moist but not clumped together. My beans were partially covered by the gravy so that might have biased my opinion on them. The guacamole was fresh, a good consistency, and not overspiced. The tea was "sweet" the way I like it, not just "sweetened" or "with sugar" - but really sweet. It was crowded and I had to wait a couple of minutes for a clean table. You seat yourself. The service was good and speedy. The bathroom was clean. I will...

Mr. Taco is a restaurant that truly does not match it's name. Taco is in the name, but tacos are minor item on the menu. Mr. Taco has a vast menu spanning everything from seafood to burgers to pancakes. There is something for the whole family at Mr. Taco, even if you are not in the mood for Mexican or Tex Mex.
If you follow my restaurant reviews, you know I am fan of Mexican Caldo. Just call me the Caldo Connoisseur. The Caldo at Mr. Taco is on point. While Gorditas Mexico (Galveston) still weasr the crown as far as the best caldo in Texas, Mr. Taco is right up there with them. Everything else I have eaten at Mr. Taco has been great and the prices are easy on the wallet.
And then there is the Chips. You might be wonder how carn chips can be different. Why they are at Mr. Taco. Unlike every other Mexican restaurant in Texas, Mr. Taco serve Puffed Corn chips. How they get their corn chips to puff up like they do, I do not know. What I do not is I will go there just to eat the chips. They are that good.
If all this was not enough, Mr. Taco throws another gem in the mix with a Mariachi ban that performs live and takes request on Friday evenings. It is a ton of fun and the guy are talented and play and sing their hearts out. Remember to give them a nice tip if you are there when they perform.
The Bottom Line: Try out Mr. Taco if you are in Gonzales, Texas....
Read moreWorst experience ever, first time visiting we arrived ordered our food , everything was fine the food took a bit Longer than expected but we didn’t mind . Why I left 1 star, my order came back wrong . I’m not picky so I shrugged it off but I did ask for cheese when I ordered it. I waited for the waiter to come back and she circled around us 5 times or so I couldn’t get her attention. After about 15 minutes or so So I went to the kitchen to ask her for cheese and she said she will get it. She circled around our table countless times helping the people around us I was getting a little frustrated bc we were feeling ignored. I asked her again while she was at One of the tables around us and she confirmed she will bring it. Kept seeing her refill drinks and take more orders I just wanted to eat my food . It was like 45 minute wait till she finally came back. Worst service ever experienced. We also noticed that we got paper cups for our drinks and the other customers got the regular red cups you get at restaurants, idk if they thought we were just kids but You can tell she was ignoring us completely, no refills either. Food was ok.also Do not get the quesadilla , it’s so small and they charge 10$ not including sides it...
