Clover Bar — Restaurant in Grand Haven

I have been going to this restaurant for 25 years, the food is really quite good, but it is not the food that is warranting this review. The service is deplorable. The staff is snarky, arrogant and rude. I ordered 4 pizzas to bring to work in September of 2015. I work an hour away and late at night. I picked them up and brought them in, when we went to eat them we noticed 2 of the pizzas were completely wrong. I emailed the restaurant the following morning and called them in the evening. The bartender refused to let me talk to a manager and when I told him what happened he would only offer me half off one pizza and no apology. The next day I called back again and talked to the same guy, again he refused but I did not tell him what it was about. I demanded to talk to a manager and finally he relented. The manager was a very snarky female and she reiterated that she wouldn't do anything. I asked politely to speak to an owner and she would not let me. She then told me I should have said something the night it happened. I said that I was an hour away and that they were closed. I also said I immediately emailed them the following morning. She informed me, in her most patronizing tone, that nobody checks that email address. She then asked "do you want half off a pizza or not!?" I replied no thanks, I will just not order from your restaurant again. She replied emphatically, "good!!!" And hung up.

The old saying goes, you go to a restaurant for the food and return for the service. Well this patron is not returning to a restaurant that has consistently made some of the best pizza around for 25 years. This was about the worst customer service I've ever...

Extreme let down. Have good memories from the past. Went there 10/13/17 at 8. Service was on point until the food came. We had 3 people and 3 pizzas. The first came out. Ten minutes later the second and another two for the third. The second was burned in parts and way too salty and the cheese was two inches from the edge on a 10" pizza. The third was not cooked on half of it. This is when the service went wrong. The waitress never stopped by our table to check on us for 15 minutes. When I finally flagged down the bus girl to please find our waitress she came by. I explained the problem. She seemed put out as she said she would ask the owner how to handle it and didn't apologize. She came back with the first pizza wrapped and said we got half price for the other two stating the owner would have preferred the chance to remake them. I said I would have liked that chance too but told her she didn't come back and we had to get the busser to go and get her. She snipped,"fine I will pay for it," and stormed away. I have been a server for over 20 years and it takes a lot for me to only tip 20% let alone totally stiff a server and even more to lead to a scathing review. I've sampled pizza from nearly every state in the US while traveling for work. Chicago, Louisville, Key West and Grand Haven/greater Grand Rapids house in my opinion the best pizzas in the country. For such a small city, to have Fricano's and Clover plus Vitale's (Leonard) if you consider GR, we are truly blessed with amazing options.

I remember visiting Clover as a kid after my dad and his friends played beach volleyball at the State Park. Loved the place, and nothing has changed, not even the decor - but sometimes that's a good thing. Sure, the service can be a little slow. And occasionally an employee that has been working there for 15 years gets a little prickly...but you know they must care if they've stayed that long, and it's a small inconvenience to enjoy what is one of the country's best neighborhood pizza places and a staple of Grand Haven for DECADES. I hope it stays open for decades more, and I always bring my business there when I'm in the mood for pizza. In my opinion better than Fricano's (the sauce is among the best I've had) and truly a...
