We had a lovely experience at Zeppole with Robert as our server. We originally stopped in just for drinks, but the dinner and dessert menus were so tempting that we decided to have a little bite. I can never resist burrata, and when Robert confirmed that the burrata at Zeppole was house-made, I had to give it a try. The burrata itself was delicious, but the accompaniments are what set it apart. Fresh grapefruit segments and wedges of heirloom tomato provided the perfect acidity to compliment the creamy cheese, and grilled bread was the perfect vessel. Bacon pepperonata smeared on the bottom of the dish gave a subtle smokiness and heat.
The cocktails were also delicious. I started with the Cosmopolita; vodka, St Germain and lime. It was very refreshing and well balanced and was my favorite drink of the evening. My husband had the bourbon cocktail; the Escape from Pompeii, which had a live-smoke feature and was impressive, both visually and in flavor. We also tried the Gladiator, a rum cocktail with an interesting basil and blackberry garnish.
We went out on a limb and ordered the Spumoni dessert. Layers of pistachio, strawberry and vanilla ice creams enrobed in toasted meringue and sitting atop a thin layer of white cake. Finely diced, macerated strawberries are the perfect garnish to brighten the dish and give a stunning color. This dessert was obviously very well thought out and conceptualized and the mind behind it should be very, very proud.
All of this and more is why we highly recommend making time for Zeppole when you’re at the Gaylord Texan. However, what stood out to us the most was the service we received from Robert. Admittedly, we came in shortly before closing, which is a universal pet peeve for restaurant workers. It didn’t seem to phase Robert though, and he served us with patience, kindness and an excellent knowledge of the menu. He was a joy to chat with. He gave us excellent suggestions for other restaurants to try while we’re in Texas. In true Italian form, he also treated us to adorable little cookies at the end of our meal. He was hospitable and lovely.
If you decide to visit Zeppole at the Gaylord, do yourself a favor and ask for Robert. And while you’re at it, do us a favor: tell him that Kelly and...
Read moreLast night I ate at Zeppole with a friend and had one of the most exceptional culinary experiences to date. It was incredible! The menu had a variety of unique dishes that the whole family could enjoy or would also be appropriate for a date night setting as well. I really enjoy trying different types of food (and appreciate the creativity that goes into creating a dish on the menu) and I was extremely pleased with the different items we tried.
The menu is rather large so there are plenty of options to decide from. We started out with the crudo which was wonderful. I really enjoyed the beets with goat cheese (SO flavorful) – the selection of herbs made it a really unique dish. You can’t go wrong with the brussel sprouts as a side– they were cooked perfect. The carpaccio was one of the best I’ve had. For dinner we shared the scallops and the squid ink pasta with shrimp– both exquisite. The seafood melted in your mouth. I am a fan of both shrimp and scallops and they were cooked perfect.
I can tell the executive chef put a lot of time and effort into choosing ingredients for each dish that would blend perfectly and create a tasteful final product with the right amount of complexity. The prices were spot on for the quality and I was really impressed by the size of the dish for the price.
The service was top notch – our water glasses were always full, the wine was chilled to the perfect temperature (a delicious recommendation from Napa that paired perfectly with our dishes) and the courses were spaced appropriately. The staff were attentive and professional – they really took care of us throughout our two hour dining experience. The lighting was inviting, the kitchen was open and showcased the hard work of the chefs, and the environment was fun and upbeat, which was perfect for the setting of the Gaylord (beautiful hotel!). I will definitely be back and look forward to trying new dishes on...
Read moreI have eaten here multiple times and I am sad to say that my last visit was superiorly sub par. We made reservations and when we arrived we were escorted to a dirty table and then left standing in the middle of the restaurant waiting for someone to show us to another table. Once we were finally seated we were promptly greeted by a server who took our drink orders. Then greeted by another server who brought us all water and asked for our drink orders. Then again greeted by a third server who wanted our drink order. It felt very disorganized and chaotic. Not once did the manager step out and apologize for the blunder or check on us. On to the meal: I ordered the lobster peppardelle and it just didn’t live up to my expectations from previous meal experiences. My lobster was over cooked and very chewy. It also had shrimp mixed in as if to act as a filler/ substitute for the small amount of lobster that was in my dish. I must mention that I was being charged market price for this “lobster”. The menu described the dish as having ribbons of zucchini. I had two very thin measly strips of zucchini. My husband had the pistachio crusted salmon. There was no crust to his salmon. Just a few pistachio crumbs in the center of his fish. Our meals were not what we had expected from reading the menu and our service felt like it was rushed. Sadly I will not be returning nor will I recommend any of my friends or family to visit. It was just too expensxive for mediocre meals and the frustration. The only reason why I’m giving them a 2 and not a 1 is because my husbands old fashioned and my wine were really good. Probably the only thing enjoyable about...
