Ume Asian Cuisine — Restaurant in Grosse Ile Township

I really like this place! The food seems solid, and it's awesome to have the option on the island. But they are so slow when they're busy! (Which is often). Today, I placed an order, and they told me about 35 minutes. It usually takes about double the time, so I got there an hour and ten minutes later. And I STILL had to wait another 25 minutes or so. I don't mind too much, I just expect it. But if you're in a hurry, I would try them a different time, when you're not. I've worked in restaurants off and on my whole life. From what I can tell, they're short about one person when they're busiest. The same lady (an owner? I get the feeling this may be a family operation?) is busting her butt running around trying to answer the phone, take orders, cash people out, wait on tables, put orders together, resolve minor errors with kitchen, etc. She never slows down, juggles it all surprisingly well, and manages to still be nice to people! It's impressive. But if they had one person answering phones, entering to go orders into their POS system, and cashing people out; and then one more person waiting tables and putting the to go orders together, I think it would speed things up considerably. But then they'd have to find somebody willing to work only a couple of hours a night, and pay an extra person, which would eat into profits. And most restaurants already run on a pretty small margin, so...since I still like them, and want to support local businesses, I'll just reserve my orders for nights when I have an hour or...

Excellent quality food! Fresh, flavorful, beautiful. Great variety of sushi & fusion choices, Chinese classics, hibachi, even ceviche. A selection of types of Sake and Japanese beers for the adults, and the glass ramune-style drink bottles with the marble for the kids. Small family business, they know their customers, they care about their guests, their food, the whole experience. I love the basics (spicy tuna roll, spicy salmon roll, salad with ginger dressing); and also the more complex sushi rolls, the hibachi (shrimp appetizer, yum yum sauce, fried rice, featured protein (shrimp & steak are big favorites at our house) and vegetables (squash, onion, mushroom, carrot etc- big, juicy chunks.) I enjoyed the ceviche for the first time today, it’s very flavorful with a generous amount of roe, fresh cilantro, mango, and a variety of seafood- fish and crab. Definitely try it out! June 12th 2024- We walked in and sat down and said hello to the lady sweeping the floor. She kept on sweeping and exactly 13 minutes later walked by and dropped two menus on the table and walked away. Ten minutes later a family that she recognized walked in she walked over and spoke with them and asked what they would like to drink! We sat for ten more minutes and she never came over!! We got up and walked out. She never said a word to us!! I have never in my life been that disrespected. I would not go back if they were offering free dinners. I wish I could give ZERO STARS….
