The Chumbucket of a vegan cuisine
-what angered me the most is that "customer is always right" does not apply here -you will receive greasy food, some with strange tastes and textures and when you write a honest review, the owner will say straight up that this isnt true, that you're spreading lies to hurt her business, will publicly share names of the party you came with who also ate there and left their opinion. -owner is in denial and not professional. -I have been an operations manager for a vegan company of 5 locations in NYC for years and I have no intention of spreading lies especially since I have nothing to do with this restaurant. I was just sharing my opinion and experience in the food industry.
I ordered 3 items which were the guacamole (their famous) burger, heirloom tomato pizza and a tiramisu dessert.
The burger: served on a soft bun with a side of onion rings. The burger left grease puddle on the takeout container as soon as it was picked up. Upon two bites the burger fell apart, the cheese split into a bunch of small pieces and also ended up falling out of the sandwich. The "meat" inside had a strange taste, similar to toffurky, just a bit more pronounced. The guacamole was barely on the burger. The onion rings were served cold and were a bit soggy. Overall a very greasy, flavor lacking dish. The heirloom pizza: Dough: probably the best part of the dish. It was soggy due to the heirloom tomatoes soaking it in their juices Cheese: lacking a cheese flavor and texture. The texture was very similar to a hot (temperature) yogurt. Gross. Excess grease was also present on the pizza, to my surprise as for someone who has been making vegan pizzas for years I can't think where the excess grease would come from since no real cheese was used and most nut cheeses do not release grease to such extent. Tiramisu dessert: Overly sweet, lack of the actual cake, 90% cream and a small layer of cake. Very little coffee flavor, sad, because tiramisu is a coffee dessert. The cream/filling had a sour aftertaste that made me think a cannoli filling has been used/added. It did not taste like a tiramisu.
Lastly, the food is overpriced and not at all healthy.
For those on here saying that this is the best vegan food they have eaten, I strongly urge you to widen your culinary horizons as a burger king's impossible whooper beats their "famous" burger 10 to 1. It is cheaper too.
Reply to the store owner: I am greatly dissapointed that you have managed to quickly debunk my claim however falsely. I will stand by my review and let other unfortunate shoppers confirm it. I have made nut cheeses at home in a blender that had more cheese texture and flavor than your so called cultured cheeses. Clearly you are not familiar with a good nut cheese. I have worked at vegan kitchens for 7+ years all over Manhattan and Brooklyn (NYC) I have seen true creativity and passion that was poured into food, this is not the case at your restaurant. You complained that two people have posted a review however there was an order for 2 guests. Two people ate your food and two people were greatly dissapointed by it therefore two people have the right to write their review of the food they ate. The "cheese" on your pizza had indeed a texture of a yogurt. Perhaps you should quality control the food that comes out of your kitchen. The burger was served on a soft bun whether it is a pretzel bun it is still considered to be soft bread. The tiramisu was sweet and sour I guess you have never experienced this flavor combination before as you were so eager to question how can something be sweet and sour at the same time. Lastly, as of the grease...please check your "broth" maybe instead of making it with water your kitchen used oil. I had to take tums first time in 6 months. Anyway, enjoy your grease.
P.s. that Large pizza you speak of was only 10" that's a personal pizza size, and I paid $49.20 not $42. That's $50 for a bowl of grease, hot yogurt cheese soggy pizza and all cream cannoli tiramisu. I would love to see the award...
Read moreWhere to start. Placed an order for two meatball subs and fried dough with sauce and cheese at 1:00pm. It was busy, and the person behind the counter said it would be a little while. My food finally came at 1:50. That’s right, 50 minutes for two sandwiches and what was essentially a small personal pizza. It’s a good thing I had no place to be. It looked like there was only one person preparing orders, one order at a time. The only time anyone apologized to us for the wait was when the food finally arrived. And, while I appreciated the fact that a woman appeared with samples of their pizza, I was wondering why she wasn’t helping prepare the food that we were all waiting for.
How was the food? It was ok, but I have had better at other vegan bakery/lunch establishments. I had one of the subs; the sauce was very good but the meatballs were pretty bland and the consistency reminded my of meat meatballs with too much breadcrumbs added. The bread was fine. As far as the fried dough is concerned, we expected pieces of fried dough, not a personal pizza. Apparently it was ok, though.
When visiting a vegan restaurant, there are also certain expectations beyond the food. I expect to see some eco-awareness. We ate in, but the amount of packaging was unbelievable. Instead of serving the food on plain paper plates, the sandwiches were packed in thick cardboard boxes, the fried dough came in a pizza box, the utensils are plastic (not compostable), and there isn’t even a separate bin for recyclables.
Overall, would I recommend Three Girls Vegan? Based on my one (and likely only) visit, absolutely not. If it takes almost an hour to serve lunch on a Saturday afternoon, I can’t help but wonder how they handle a lunch rush when people actually have someplace to go.
In answer to Three Girls Vegan's response:
The menu says fried dough, not pizza, and we were NOT told it would take an additional 30 minutes. If we had been told that, we would not have ordered it. Plus, an additional 30 minutes implies that two sandwiches would have taken 20 minutes to prepare. Additionally, the orders seem to have been prepared in the order they were taken (as would be expected). The people on line in front of us also had to wait 50 minutes for their order. And people who came in after us, had a longer wait. You were simply ill equipped for the number of people in your shop. If this is standard for your shop, why were people being told "sorry for the wait" when their food finally arrived. Was everybody ordering pizza?
Though you may be primarily take-out, there are tables inside and out, so you obviously expect some people to eat in. At least have a recycling container; you do, after all have a garbage bin. And, if the thick cardboard boxes are as eco-friendly as you can get, I'd suggest you check out any deli that uses thinner cardboard for take-out and paper plates for eat-in. And, compostable utensils are very easy to come by.
Seriously? Bring our own utensils and plates. Perhaps we should have brought our own food, too.
I was not complaining about the free samples. My comment was that she would have been more useful getting orders prepared and out to customers. And, I wonder how many pizzas were delayed while the samples were being prepared.
You claim to be primarily a take-out establishment, yet you seem to think that a wait of almost an hour is ok. Your arrogant and defensive response to a customer's complaint really says all that anyone needs to know about your...
Read moreI can’t think of a single good reason why this place came so recommended to us. My friend and I drove 1.5 hours from massachusetts to try this spot, as we were craving some comfort food and a day trip. We had placed an online order at 10am for pickup at 1:30pm. Well, it wasn’t ready for at least another 20-30 minutes after we got there.
By the time the food arrived, we were starving. We were so excited to try it, but the food was absolutely pitiful. I had ordered garlic knots and the meatball sandwich. The garlic knots were stale, tough, and hard to eat. They weren’t soft and pillowy as you would expect, and they tasted at least a day old. The meatball sandwich was pathetic. I was expecting a meatball sub, but instead, it was ONE MEATBALL in between a small piece of bread. The bread was soggy and the whole thing was inedible. Also, the prices were ridiculous. For $17, I’d expect a more substantial and tasty sandwich. And for $17, I’d at least expect more than one meatball.
We are two vegans who eat clean, and only have “vegan junk food” for special occasions. The oil from this restaurant wrecked our stomachs for the rest of the day. And we didn’t even finish a single item that we ordered. We felt so queasy and had to “walk it off”.
In addition to the slow service, the high prices, and the gross food, there was also zero ambience to this restaurant. It’s basically a “grab and go” place, which we did not know. Every surface is white and sterile (there’s only one picture on the wall). There’s also no bathroom. If you’re waiting for your food for 30 minutes, you shouldn’t have to go across the street to pee at mcdonald’s. It is not a very welcoming environment that you would want to dine at.
I’ve been to dozens of vegan restaurants around the country, and I really cannot think of a worse vegan restaurant than this one. I’m not sure what people see in this place. We left this restaurant with our wallets emptied, our time wasted, and our stomachs nauseous. I wouldn’t...
