A Michelin-Star-Worthy Experience in Mechanicsburg

My wife, my adult autistic son, and I visited Black n Bleu on Valentine’s Day at 4:30 PM without a reservation. Given the occasion, I fully expected to hear that they either couldn’t accommodate us or that we’d face a long wait. Instead, we were quoted 45 minutes—a completely reasonable time given how packed the restaurant was. To our surprise, we were seated in just 20 minutes, despite the continuous flow of guests filling the lobby.

From the moment we sat down, it was clear we were in the hands of a true hospitality professional. Our server was attentive, efficient, and incredibly personable—one of the best we've encountered in years. She managed to balance warmth with professionalism, giving us the perfect level of attention without ever making us feel rushed or overlooked.

An Unparalleled Commitment to Personalized Service

One of the most impressive aspects of our experience was her sensitivity and care toward our son, who is autistic and non-verbal. Without hesitation, she took it upon herself to deconstruct his salad to make it easier for him to eat, ensuring he felt comfortable and accommodated. She also made certain his steak was prepared exactly to his needs, treating this request not as an inconvenience but as a priority.

Then came my entrée: Salt-Baked Trout with Parmesan Orzo and Crispy Fried Spinach—and let me tell you, it was a culinary masterpiece. The fish arrived whole but deboned, an impressive presentation in itself. Before serving it to me, our server went above and beyond by first checking whether my son might be uncomfortable seeing the largely intact fish. When I confirmed it wouldn't be an issue, she proceeded with grace and precision, expertly opening the fish, carefully removing the contents, and plating it beautifully right in front of me. This kind of tableside service is something I’d expect in a Michelin-starred restaurant, not just anywhere.

I would have said all this privately because I’m really not one to normally make a fuss, but there’s no way to contact anyone online.

Tonight was my 40th birthday and I came in to celebrate. I brought my friend here for dinner in December for her birthday as well.

To summarize.. She ordered the soup but it didn’t come with a spoon. My friend tried several times to get someone to bring her a spoon but it easily took 15-20 min to receive one. Within 30 seconds of finally getting a spoon, her main course arrived. They told her they would put it under the light to stay warm while she eats her soggy and half cold French onion soup. So she finishes the soup but by the time she got someone to bring back the main course, that was also stone cold. She didn’t want to complain so she just took it with her to warm up again later at home.

Well, fast forward to my birthday tonight and the identical thing happened, yet again. I ordered the French onion soup, and it arrived with scissors and no spoon. (Why not wrap spoons with the silverware like everywhere else?) Every waitress that walked by had their backs to me. I had to rudely bother two other waitresses who were walking past me, and I asked them to bring me a spoon. They both said yes but then neither of them brought me a spoon. I was flat out ignored. Eventually my waitress reappeared and I told her I’ve been waiting for a spoon. She quickly ran and got one which I was very grateful for. But then literally within 15 seconds of the spoon arriving, the prime rib main course arrived. So they sent it back to the light and I ate my soggy soup. Then I waited ages for the main to be brought back. It was cold so I brought it home with me tonight and I’ll just eat it tomorrow.

What’s more, is I ordered a pina colada and about halfway through the drink I set the glass down and the stem shattered, spilling the drink all over me, the table and the floor. The waitresses that walked by continued to ignore me until the table across the way pointed out to them that I was completely covered in my drink. It took several minutes to get assistance. I also cut my hand on the glass and had to use napkins to stop the bleeding, but I needed to wait several minutes for those napkins to arrive.

So like I said, I don’t normally complain about restaurants but all I can say is WTAF. Not worth the 20 bucks...

We were in the Mechanicsburg area on our way to a wedding and wanted to find a spot for lunch- TripAdvisor had Black n Bleu listed as one of the top options, and it does deserve to be one of the top spots! We arrived shortly after they opened so we were seated immediately and it wasn’t too busy, but as we were there, multiple parties (including one large one) arrived. Tammy, our server, provided outstanding service, taking our orders for our party of four with a 2-check split without needing to write anything down and being really on top of refills and checking in on us. The restaurant was clean to start, but she continued to keep our table very neat, collecting straw wrappers and any extra plates or silverware as soon as she could to keep things out of the way. When it came time to box up our food, she boxed everything for us, making sure to include what we wanted and exclude any scraps we didn’t want. She brought a great dry sense of humor to our interactions and took our overall experience up a notch. And of course, the food was EXCELLENT! I had the monster burger, mostly because the description of having two 8 ounce patties plus slow cooked short rib, bacon, onion straws, barbecue sauce, and cheese sounded too amazing and interesting to pass up. It truly is a monster, I couldn’t get my mouth around it! Cooked perfectly to medium, it had a great flavor, and even the leftovers were delicious, which isn’t always the case with burgers. I did have to add salt to my fries, but everything else was seasoned well. My husband had the blacked chicken melt and enjoyed it, having enough to take half of his meal home as well. Our friends had the wedge salad and the crab ravioli and were impressed with those choices also. All of this to say, if you’re in the area, Black n Bleu is very much worth the stop.

The food was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! It’s definitely, I mean definitely not what you would imagine it would be on the inside when you see it on the outside! That’s for sure! Yes their advertising reads … “Black Tie, Casual Attire, Come As You Are!” This is true … it’s doesn’t matter … however, the environment and atmosphere is lacking a great deal from the staff, the choice of music, PERIOD! The decorum is definitely different, unique, stylish with a lot of flare!! A MUST SEE! I do not prefer ever to leave non-positive feedback especially when the food was as delicious as this. Most importantly, never less than a “3”; however, will share professional areas of opportunity regarding the atmosphere it was lacking something. Our server’s demeanor, though she was somewhat okay, just didn’t seem to enjoy her time there, not a much pleasant demeanor. Though it may very well have been her personality as some people just have this type of personality after all. No fault of hers. She did seem to be trying awfully hard to be nice. I would prefer it for her not to fake it. Simply select a different profession if this doesn’t make one happy. It’s just not worth going in day after day to a miserable job, even if you make tons of money! If you LOVE what you do it will never feel like a JOB! Nonetheless I simply just simply cannot say enough about the food and beverages!! These were photo quality folks! Just look at these!! It is RARE, YES RARE that a CHEF can actually cook EXACTLY to the POINT a RARE burger patty and my sandwich which happen to be a filet mignon was “SPOT ON!”

Yes their advertising reads … “Black Tie, Casual Attire, Come As You Are!” This is true … it’s doesn’t matter … however, the environment and atmosphere is lacking a great deal from the staff, the choice of music, PERIOD! The decorum is definitely different, unique, stylish with a lot of flare!! A MUST SEE! I do not prefer ever to leave non-positive feedback especially when the food was as delicious as this. Most importantly, never less than a “3”; however, will share professional areas of opportunity regarding the atmosphere it was lacking something. Our server’s demeanor, though she was somewhat okay, just didn’t seem to enjoy her time there, not a much pleasant demeanor. Though it may very well have been her personality as some people just have this type of personality after all. No fault of hers. She did seem to be trying awfully hard to be nice. I would prefer it for her not to fake it. Simply select a different profession if this doesn’t make one happy. It’s just not worth going in day after day to a miserable job, even if you make tons of money! If you LOVE what you do it will never feel like a JOB! Nonetheless I simply just simply cannot say enough about the food and beverages!! These were photo quality folks! Just look at these!! It is RARE, YES RARE that a CHEF can actually cook EXACTLY to the POINT a RARE burger patty and my sandwich which happen to be a filet mignon was “SPOT ON!”
