Reggae Vybz — Restaurant in Hampton

I've been frequenting here for 3 years since my 1st trip to Jamaica & I was turned onto Ackee & Saltfish. I love this mom & pops family ran business & they're dishes. I always have been greeted & served by the son or father & talk with the mom, as I know she's the main 1 that cooks the delicious dishes 😋 they're all so friendly, nice & make you feel at home. Although this morning, 3/9/24, I went in to get my favorite dish as it's only served on Saturday. The lady at the counter asked me what could she get me, I replied ackee & saltfish with rice & peas, cabbage & mac & cheese, is it ready, cause it was like 11:10am. I know the mac & cheese doesn't anyways come out soon or shortly after they open. She said yes, ok, hold on & went to the back. About 2 minutes later, she comes back with a much younger girl & she asks me what I want? I replied, my usual, Acker & Saltfish with rice & peas, cabbage & mac & cheese. She said oh you want an extra side? I said I want my usual, like I just stated. I said are you 2 new? Was ownership changed or something, is the son here? Where's the mom? She said something about another business being ran on Saturday & they would be here....so anyhoo, the older lady proceeded to fix my tray, I said large plz, but while she was fixing it the younger girl was standing to the left on the wall watching the lady prepare my tray. She did the rice & peas & once she served a spoonful & a half of ackee & saltfish, she told her that was "enough". So, I basiclly received a small platter! She's didn't even spread it out & cover my rice, at least, like the son does. Perception is everything, ppl shop with their eyes when it comes to food & customer service. I didn't even receive a good morning, thank you, how are you doing today, nothing from this unusal encounter today at my favorite & only Jamaican restaurant. But 1 thing is 4 sure & 2 is certain, I will not visit this establishment if the mother/son isn't there or I'm having to deal with an uncomfortable atmosphere. And they charged me $2 extra 4 gravy on my rice & peas. The ackee & saltfish looked really soggy & asked why & and she said it was because it was on top of the rice🤣 it did taste better than it looked though! Once I got home & mixed it up, all I was eating was rice, I could barely taste the ackee & saltfish. All of the food is AMAZING 10/10.Super flavorful and cabbage is tender. I usually get the Stew chicken with oxtail gravy and white rice with Mac n cheese and cabbage for my side. Tonight I ordered my usual but i ordered through doordash. I usually get a small cup of oxtail gravy on the side because I like a lot of gravy. I didn’t receive the gravy on the side and got a very small amount of gravy on the plate. I then called up to the restaurant to see if anything could be done being that I don’t have a car and couldn’t simply come get the gravy. The Owner eneded up answering the phone and once I explained what happened she apologized for the inconvenience and then proceeded to ask for my address so that she could PERSONALLY bring me a side of oxtail gravy. I wasn’t really depending on it until I received a phone call 20 minutes later telling me that she was outside. Not only did she bring extra EXTRA gravy, she also gave me another side order of stew chicken as well. THIS is great customer service. The owner is a very sweet and humble woman who goes out of her way to guarantee customer satisfaction. She has now gained a customer for life and i will always recommend this spot to a friend because I know when they go they will be valued as a customer just as I was. I also tried to tip her and she WOULD NOT accept it! Because “I’m the customer”. I am really grateful and it feels good to know there are still business owners who take pride in their image and are willing to make sure their customers are happy. I will be back very soon....

I was Not impressed. The Oxtails were far from tender and I personally didn't like the taste of the gravy. I would complain about my container being filled with miniature oxtails (they were extremely small) but the food was so subpar that it became my least concern. The cabbage was unseasoned and based on the crunch it may have been flash steamed. Which I would have been okay with, if they added at least a pinch of salt (I rarely use salt) but anything would've helped. Lastly the mac & cheese, now salt is a must when preparing any type of pasta noodle so although the noodles were cooked properly the preparation method left the noodles flavorless and I'm not sure what type of cheese they used but it definitely wasn't cheesing! For those who want to give it try, I suggest ordering a smaller portion size the first time. The upside to it all and based on my experience, they accommodate if you call with a special request. After being unable to order the curry online, I called and asked it they can add some of the potato and carrot from the curry and he (male who stated he was the manager on duty at the time) had no problem doing so, even though I'm pretty sure they were...
