I've been there before but I really want to leave a review for this time.
I got the Boalsburg Beast sandwich (roast beef, yellow cheddar, & horseradish sauce) and the sauce was so intense & abundant that it was physically painful to consume. I cried a little, actually. (compliment) So, as a member of the germanic cultural diaspora; you nailed it! 👍 Not for the faint of heart (more like sinuses) so anyone not used to horseradish ought to ask for the sandwich with less sauce and perhaps consider putting mayo on it.
I also got one of the seasonal lotus syrup beverages, the Magic Dragon (the dragonfruit, guava,& coconut milk one) and it was Even Better than I expected and I already expected it to be pretty darn good. My whole family agreed it was very good and the rest of them don't even really like dragonfruit at all.
My sister got the Almond Croissant, which was excellent; the almond paste in the middle was fantastic. She also got a Vanilla Chai Latte which could be best described as "decadent".
My mother got a sandwich that I did not receive a comment on and also a different beverage from the seasonal lotus syrup collection, the Lovestruck, which was delicious with a lovely strawberries & cream sort of flavor. We all agreed it was fantastic.
My father got the Chicken Salad Sandwich which he said was very good. It even had craisins in it, as it should.
We love the Pump Station Cafe, and we like to go there whenever the circumstances align accordingly.
Our beverages took a hot minute to come out but we weren't in a rush and everything was well worth the wait. They were very obviously busy as it was Memorial Day Weekend and they are located cattycorner to the Boalsburg Cemetery: while additionally being adjacent to the Military Museum Field and there were people there due to the Historical Re-enactment later that day. All this to say; the wait-time was fully justified by the...
Read moreGreat service, but bad espresso and terrible food.
"We make them kinda like Starbucks", was what the kind lady behind the counter said when I asked about the "traditional" macchiato that they advertise on their website menu. Turns out, they no longer make proper espresso drinks, just standard coffee milkshakes. Mind you, there's nothing wrong with that in principle. But at least stop advertising traditional macchiatos and cafe con panna on your website.
What really drove us away was:
The breakfast burrito had 2 thick slices of beefsteak tomato and a quarter of a raw onion in long thick chunks. So it was essentially a tomato and onion wrap drenched in sour cream and salsa. Not only bad, but downright confusing.
The double espresso was over extracted to the point of being acrid and extremely bitter. It was about 150ml of espresso-adjacent bitter bean juice. It's a shame too, because they have the equipment and quality beans to make proper espresso.
I would love to reevaluate this review if they improve on their food and drinks. Its such a great...
Read moreThis is a very cool spot for a cafe: an old 1940s era gas station, complete with the old Gulf sign on display inside. They have great homemade baked goods and coffee made from local vendors which looked really good (didn’t get to try it though). But we were there for the coffee and cappuccino’s. It was really good, and I’d probably have given it 5-stars if it didn’t find coffee grounds in my regular coffee. My wife’s cappuccino was great from what I was told. It’s a great location right off Rt. 322 in Boalsburg just east of downtown State College. Service was really pleasant. They have a small space for seating inside. And just FYI, the parking lot is pretty tight. But it’s worth the trip. Beats your typical Starbucks or Dunkin! And they have a drive-through! Plus outdoor seating when the weather is nice! Looking forward to coming back to hopefully give them five...
