Mackie's Pizza — Restaurant in Harrisburg

I can't believe the other reviews for this place are real. We have only eaten at Mackie's in Harrisburg, IL twice. Neither of us could remember why we didn't like it the first time but with the reviews we figured we must have just been there on a bad day and needed to give it a second chance. Well I can say for sure now that this is the worst pizza that we have ever had. We got a deep dish pepperoni. It was burnt! It is the toughest crust that I have ever experienced, we were sick and tired of chewing it way before we were ever full. The sauce is sickening sweet, pizza sauce should not be sweet! After we made it through our first piece, the pizza had cooled and the cheese on the second piece was about as difficult to bite through as the crust. I was angry laughing as I was gnawing on a piece while watching my wife bite 5 times to get her first bite separated from her second piece of pizza. We typically like crushed red pepper on the pizza and that was a mistake the flavor profile was burnt, sweet, spicy, that was just way confusing to the taste buds, and if my first piece of pizza had any pepperoni on it I couldn't tell. I had it cold last night because I was afraid of how tough the crust would be warmed up. It was still a challenge to chew and I swear it seemed sweeter. Brenda said to throw her’s out to the raccoons because she wasn't eating it. As for the ambiance of the restaurant - the dining room was so full of smoke from the kitchen it had my eyes burning and watering the entire time that we were in there. We are going to do our best to remember this experience so that we never make the mistake of eating at...

First time there but have heard great things. I'm picky about pizza toppings and usually do not get what I asked for BUT not this time.... When ordering the girls at the counter (I believe were sisters) were great! They listened and made sure I got exactly what I was ordering. Hanna, one of the young ladies, even said that she was going to make it herself to be positive I got a correctly made to order pizza. Hanna did just that! She waited on us and was very helpful and took pride in her job. That was such a refreshing thing to see. Not much of that these days. She checked on us and even made suggestions on things to try on our next visit. And we absolutely will be back! We where not having a very good few days (loss family member, packing up belongs and our dog went missing) and needed something to just be ok...So thank you for the great evening at Mackie's Pizza. And Hanna, thank you especially for unknowingly making a couple of ppl feel like it's not all lost out here. Thanks Mackie's

This is a Harrisburg icon. One must have the Harrisburg Special with apples, no anchovies to truly wrap oneself around what Mackie's brings to the local body. The crust of the deep dish they serve has a comforting yeast roll sweetness about it that is unique to the area. A letdown is there is no beer with the pizza, but it doesn't detract from the overall dining experience. Another item on the order that is light and savory is the grilled chicken caesar salad. A recent addition of gyros to the menu is decent, just don't go expecting the greek diner experience or you will be let down. Overall however the gyros are good.
