I cringe when I have to give my locals bad reviews, so.... I won’t exactly do that. I will just call this place mediocre. I just was not impressed.
Good: It was pretty easy to get in and out of their parking lot, and when I went inside, the place was bright, neat, and very clean. The case was well stocked at 7:30 AM on a Saturday.
The rest: got three donuts, a vanilla glazed, which I found just was kind of tasteless, even though it had good texture in the icing and the donut. The second donut was an old-fashioned, which is what I judge all donut shops by, right or wrong. The flavor didn’t wow me, and even though it was glazed well and looked good, I felt that the ratio of glaze soaked crispiness to inside tenderness was off, with too little of the inside goodness. It just seemed too thin to me.
What I was most excited about, and most disappointed in, was the glazed croissant. I saw it in the case, and my brain went “whoopee!“ - it looked fantastic. I got it home and cut it apart and.... found that the inside was not cooked all the way through. When I pulled, the middle part of it stringed almost like melted mozzarella. Great idea, bad execution, I guess.
Overall, like I said, I was not impressed, but maybe they were just...
Read moreTwo people in the same week told me about Kelly's Donuts so this morning I gave it a shot. OH MY GOSH! SO GOOD!! First off, the staff is incredible. They were all super friendly. I knew I wanted a sandwich but didn't know what kind and the lady at the counter recommended the croissant sandwich. I am more of a bagel sandwich person but I went with her recommendation and ordered the bacon, egg and cheese croissant and let me tell you, I was not disappointed. This was the BEST sandwich I've ever had. And the price?! $3.50. That's cheaper than some McDonald's sandwiches. (And 100x better) I also had to get a donut because, its a donut shop, and my go-to is always cream filled (which they had). However, right next to that was a blueberry filled which I had never seen before. Definitely a good choice! The donut itself is delicious and there was the perfect amount of blueberry filling. Thankfully, this shop is down the street from my work, so I will DEFINITELY be back to try more items. (The cinnamon roll sandwich will be my next try). If you're in the area definitely stop in to Kelly's Donuts! You can call ahead OR they even have a drive thru! I'm attaching a picture...
Read morePSA: I don't think you can tip on credit cards, at least not after you've paid in drive through. (Please comment to correct if you know - I'll try to find out asap). So have some cash or ask to add a tip when you hand then your card! It means the world to show your appreciation of their hard work of making such tasty treats fresh every day! Oh man. This is one of my favorite little spots! Probably number one in STL donuts - neck and neck with World's Fair. Super convenient with the drive through window. Must try: blueberry and strawberry donuts - perfectly crispy glaze and soft textured inside, flavorful, and great with some ice cold milk! Note: you need two of them because no matter what you think you should do, stopping after one is more painful than having none. And for a bit heartier option, hands down the bacon egg and cheese croissant. Gah it's so good. Always made to order so it's nice and hot.
(Imagine a picture of aforementioned foods, shiny glaze over blue aoeckles. Or melty cheese holding together a light and buttery croissant. YUM) I forget to take pictures before it's all...
