okay... i liked it. it is possibly deserving of more than three stars, because the food was very fresh (i was delighted to see an actual handmade salad with very fresh greens and ingredients). i ordered two dishes, one of which was very good, and other was just a complete mess, so i will explain.
i ordered the gyro plate and got exactly what i hoped for--a large salad, with saffron rice forming a bed for sliced gyro meat, and the lovely cucumber yogurt sauce (i ordered extra). it also came with a side greek salad. i'm not insane about their greek dressing, but the salads were both very good, and i enjoyed the plate.
i also ordered the greek moussaka dinner and this is why i docked two stars. i appreciate that every ingredient was very fresh, the side salad was, the saffron rice cooked perfectly. but the moussaka was just all wrong--not just based on my experience of greek food, but based on their MENU description, which matched what i was looking for. when i've had moussaka in the past, it was layered ground beef and eggplant with sliced potatos and seasoning, with a layer of lovely, fluffy bechamel on top. this is how it is described on their online menu, with the addition of some marinara over the bechamel.
what i got was a little bit of sliced potato and eggplant with a slight layer of bechamel in between, covered in MORE gyro meat and then a huge layer of marinara. not only was the bechamel nearly absent, and the gyro meat most unwelcome in this context, but the marinara COMPLETELY overwhelmed the flavor of everything except the meat. i was crushed. this is my favorite, favorite greek dish. i've never had it with marinara, either; i suppose this is a turkish twist? i'm no native so i can't say. maybe i've had inauthentic moussaka my whole life, but geez, i did buy it from actual greeks in actual greek restaurants in an ethnically rich area (boston, among others).
i just felt like the moussaka was hodge-podged together and not in a very well thought-out manner. oh well! i might have been so disappointed but it was the whole reason i put together the order, the gyro plate was for a second meal (since delivery fees are so high around here, i always order extra to make it...
Read moreDisappointing experience on how I was viewed as a customer that HAD come to the establishment on numerous occasions. I used the online ordering menu as I normally do. This particular day. The restaurant was having issues with processing orders. Not the 1st time this has happened. My order was supposed to be complete at 7:25 pm. I arrived at around 7:40pm. The young lady explained that they were having issues processing orders. I think okay no biggie things happen. So, after waiting another 20 minutes and literally being examined for all the order information. I guess they were trying to determine if my order was legitimate. I finally get my food. I thought out of courtesy it would be appropriate to do something for the customer and inconvenience. A small token of wanting me to remain a happy valued customer. She replied let me ask the guy. I'm guessing he's her father and owner. He breaks out in a tirade raising his voice at me and saying the problem was not their fault. Lol News flash. If it is something that the business uses and there's a problem. It's your fault. Either way that is no way to treat a former customer. As many mistakes and mishaps in the food industry. There should be a better effort to please the customer. It's my hard earned money 💰. The food can be good. But the manner of service is as equally important. Remember that next time a customer has problems. I don't see that customer tip button grayed out when you happily took my money. From here on I'll take my $50 + orders to Odeh's Mediterranean Kitchen where I can get better service and arguably...
Read moreWow, wow, wow. This place may not look like much from the outside, but BOY is their food amazing.
I had only tried baba ghanoush for the first time a couple weeks ago, at another restaurant, and I thought, "Yeah, this stuff is pretty good. I might eat it again." I had it here at Taste of Troy, and it changed my whole idea about what food can be. It's smoky and complex and just... food of the gods. Served with super-fresh, warm pita?!? Forget it. Amazing.
All the food we had (and we had a LOT -- I ordered an entree AND the appetizer sampler so I'd have plenty to take home) was so fresh and flavorful. The chef is French-trained and has worked at high-class restaurants in several countries, and he. knows. his. stuff.
I'd never had Turkish tea before, and that was delightful. The baklava was delicious; it seems they make it in small batches throughout the day; we saw him pouring the honey sauce over a fresh batch just as we were leaving.
They don't serve alcoholic beverages, and their overall beverage selection is very limited, but the food... oh my goodness, the food!
The atmosphere is a small, diner-y type feel, where you can see the kitchen and talk to the chef over the counter if you'd like. They were playing Christian music when we were there, and I'd prefer something (anything) else, but the food makes it all worth it.
Our server was excellent: knowledgeable, friendly, and put up with our shenanigans. I'm recommending this place to...
