Food is okay. Nothing to write home about. Service was fast, nice and pleasant. The atmosphere there is more "town hall". It can get quite loud when there's a crowd. Not overwhelming, but not quiet either. The staff were warm, welcoming and speedy.
The prices for most stuff are quite reasonable. Cool.
What was not cool, was $6.50 for a 'large' chocolate milk. Large in this case was slightly less than a pint.
Word to the folks at Maple and Yolk: if you're going to charge Cook County IL prices for the mundane stuff...you should be located in Cook County.
$6.50? Seriously? In Indiana you can get 2 gallons of milk for less than that. Hawaii has the most expensive milk in the US, and for $6.50 you can get a gallon of milk in Hawaii and receive change.
Please, do not tell me that the chocolate syrup requires an insane up charge either.
I expect a pint of Guinness to cost me $6.50 or more at a bar. But a pint of milk? Really?
Someone there needs to review their pricing practices, because that is quite the markup. If they want to insist on charging that for milk...they should at least make it a bit of a performance piece; have the waitress come up to me with a ski mask, and tell me to put the money in a paper bag.
In any event, we'll give this place another go at some point, but I think I'll be sticking to my early morning...
Read moreThis place is no different than any family breakfast restaurant. Mid food that's really bland and a very predictable menu... also very limited hours. I've eaten there several times now as I live nearby. Takeout both times was disappointing, rubbery, and ice cold (i grabbed it fresh from the back and live 3 minutes away) due to poor packaging. Someone got avocado toast and it was just bread with avocado smeared on it, not toasted at all (it tastes like buttered bread, that's it). With the other toppings it was just wet bread. Greek skillet was flavorless both times I had it before. French toast was barely cooked; just bread. It's also always VERY loud (floors and walls fault). Anyways, this place is really no different than say the nearby Paragon or the Pancake House, except the prices are much much much higher. They don't put the prices on their website's menu, so be wary. Many dishes are almost $20. So, 2 people can eat a simple breakfast for over $50 pretty easily. I've not met anyone who's had anything better to say of the place than "meh". If the prices were lower, maybe? The servers were really nice both times we dined in, the hostesses and other staff too. Just not that special for those prices, the wait, volume, and results. Today, almost all of our order went to our dog. Last time we give this local...
Read moreWe have been to Maple and Yolk a few times now, and each time is better than the last.
I personally cannot force myself to try any of the other deliciously attractive menu items as I have found my forever soul mate in the form of their Hot Honey Chicken and Waffles.
Now before I digress further into that delicacy, I am a seasoned foodie, not to the point of overseas adventures but I have traveled from coast to coast more than I have fingers on a hand. Bluntly put I have had my fair share of chicken and waffles.
Back to the meal: the Hot Honey Chicken and Waffles is by far the best thing in that menu in my very humble opinion.
The chicken each time has been tender, moist, and filled with seasonings, nothing too over powering but leaving an essence of heaven with each bite, the waffles are not just ordinary waffles, they are sugar waffles and resemble the delicious but terrible for you Carnival/fair delights we all enjoy. They are airy and fluffy, cooked to a golden brown perfection. Combine those to items with their (I believe local) heated honey it smacks you in the face with a culinary harmony that can nearly bring tears to the eyes.
I like flavor to my food, even the simplest items, and they did just that. Made an ordinary simple dish into an extraordinary culinary journey.
Kudos to the masters in...
