I come here specifically for the shrimp ceviche and the freshly made tortilla chips & reg/chile verde salsas. The flavors are always on point and I love the large portion on the ceviche. This time was a disappointment for me… *I didn’t realize they charge $2.99 per basket of chips and salsa until I got my bill. I have never noticed charges for this before. Both baskets of chips I purchased weren’t full for being charged $2.99 each. Normally they are full and I don’t mind paying if it’s a full portion. * Also, the salsa is normally inside mini crafts that prob hold 6-8 oz , but this time I was served a smaller bowl that held an approx. 4 ounces. Again. Consistency of portions and price should be known to the customer. * I ordered a side of hot habenero sauce and was given 2 tablespoons worth and charged $2.99 without any warning. Again, I don’t mind paying for a good amount of hot sauce, but for 2.99 (most likely sourced from dried habenero chiles) I’d hope I can get at least a 4 oz portion. * guac was $8.99 for about 6 oz *Lastly , my total bill was about 68 dollars for one person. 18 percent gratuity was automatically added and had I not read the fine print, would not have known. I don’t agree with automatically adding gratuity because I believe the customer should have their choice for what their server or bartender gets back as an additional tip.. Just wanted to offer some c customer feedback to help everyone’s dining experience better in the future. I’ve been in the food industry as a cook and in customer Service for over 10 years. Communicating prices, and how much for each portion tells the customer the value of their food and avoids surprises when they get their bill. I’d like to return again , but with the correct portions of food and being told what I’m charged for them. The cold beer was Excellent. I also would like to see the wait staff educated on how cash gratuity versus credit gratuity works for their benefit. Obviously, the bartender in theory should be able to keep their cash tips untaxed, In my opinion, rather than it be added onto customer bill.

NEW MANDATORY TIP 15 PERCENT regardless of table size. I went to enjoy a good meal. After I ate and the bill came I review it like normal and seen a 15 percent tip already included in the bill for a 2 person meal. Promptly paid the bill. Then while walking out I ask the young lady seating people about the tip. She said people were not tipping the wait staff enough and they don’t make a-lot of money. So they add the tip to all bills. I asked why don’t they inform customers of that policy. Didn’t have an answer. So left not wanting to make it that big of an issue. Personally i don’t have an issue paying the staff a tip especially when I have a great service experience. But that being said I don’t like the secret policy and no notification. Seems suspect and kinda shady. I also don’t like the fact that the policy affects me because of someone else’s action. The restaurant could choose to raise the prices of the meals and pay the wait staff more if they wanted to so the staff makes more money. Personally Its a disappointment to me and probably wont make an effort to go back unless the policy changes as I drove thirty minutes to eat there. The policy needs to be changed. Most people my age that can afford to eat out regularly don’t want to be surprised and uniformed with a tip policy. 2 years ago a restaurant in chicago I would frequent for breakfast called The steak and Eggar on cermak did a surcharge on tickets and I thought it was pretty bold. Needless to say I haven’t stopped eating breakfast I just haven’t went there since. Having ate there regularly at that place for 15 years. I haven’t ate there since out of principle.

I'll start by saying this, this place was awesome the first couple of times we went and were lucky enough to be seated in Jose's section, and because of that, I'm rating 3 stars. But after the last couple of times we went and had the same rude server not once, but twice and after the service we received was so bad that we walked out, we might never be returning. Too lazy to read my novel review? Scroll to the end :)

The first bad experience we had with this server was the fact that she just came up to the table and asked "what do you want?" No friendly greeting, no smiles, nothing. She took our order (shrimp cocktail for the appetizer & the deep fried tacos app too since we weren't terribly hungry) then disappeared for half an hour. Our water ran out, she didn't stop back at our table till she brought us our food (shrimp cocktail included at long last) and the tacos, which were ice cold. The plates are normally hot and they were cool to the touch. And they weren't that busy either so there was no excuse for this. She took them back and brought us a new meal and was nice enough to mumble and apology at least. We finished our food and waited forever for her to bring the check, we were at this restaurant for almost 2 1/2 hours, folks... all for cold appetizers....and that wasn't even the worst experience.

When we finally decided to go back a couple months later it was sorta busy and we were unlucky enough to get the same server. Though she at least was a little friendlier this time. They sat us on the back wall right by the bathrooms and the panels had fruit flies hanging all over them. That was the first sign we should have left. She came back with our drinks a while later and finally took our order (we needed a FEW extra minutes to decide, not almost 20). And then we ordered and waited. And waited. And waited... all while people and their kids walked/ ran past us not wearing their masks. She came around another half hour later, apologized and said the big party ahead of us had also been waiting and just got their food then she left.... and we waited some more. For 45 minutes. We felt a little bad about it because the food would be wasted, but having enough and growing hangrier by the second, we walked out. Likely never to return.

TL;DR: Avoid the back section & older server with the long dark hair unless you WANT to have awful service AND a hole burned in your wallet. Ask to sit in Jose's section or go to El...

Went with about 20 family members for my brother's birthday. So let's talk service first. It was good not great. Not cause servers were rude. Usually if u go to a mariscos restaurant. They bring to your table/s at least 2-3 salsas with one of them made of habaneros. Some restaurants give u a ceviche compliments of the restaurant. U sometimes get tostada's or crackers with it. Here we didn't get any of that besides a salsa and chips. Salsa kind of reminded me of a bottled salsa. Not horrible , but.. Don't if they're trying to save cause of the ongoing rise in prices of food or they just never done that. Most mariscos restaurants in the Chicago area usually start u off that way. Now to the food. Remember I went with about 20 - 25 people.. We ordered , our food came relatively quick considering the amount of food that was ordered by our party! So that was a good thing. Finally they brought out everyone's dish. I had to ask 3 different servers for silverware. That took them a few minutes. We also had to asked multiple times for limes , tortillas and salsa.. which we did ask if they had an habanero salsa. Much to most our delite they had some! Now to food itself , I ordered the chapuzon. It was good , decent size portion. Lil smaller than what I've had at other places. My wife had Chiles rellenos. She said they were ok. My brother the birthday boy. Had the paella. Him or I had never had that so he tried it. He let me sample it as well. It was good we thought. But who knows , we've never had it before. Also my cousins had to ask for some more tortillas and limes. That took them awhile as well. Good thing she a good sport. When they finally did bring she seemed thankful. I did read the reviews before I went there. I saw it had a 4.2. I think it's between 4.0 - 4.2. I think if the workers worked more together service could be better. They didn't seem like they had that in them. I could understand that to serve this many people can be difficult. To sum it up.. it's a nice spot decent food and drinks. Service is ok. I might give it another try. I suggest u...
