Absolutely terrible experience
Visiting Holland from out of state, we decided to come check out captain sundae, as we love to mini golf and who doesn’t like ice cream?
The ice cream was good, and that was it. After that, the experience was absolutely awful. We paid for mini golf for four, and began to play before 10… as we were finishing up, having 4 holes left, suddenly the lights go out completely on the golf course at 10:45.. ((they close at 11, so why shut off the lights 15 minutes early?))... It was very dark and hard to see, so we had to use our phone flashlights, as it was pretty dangerous with rocks and obstacles in the course that we couldn’t really see(major tripping and injury hazard for two young children, no?). An employee peeked around the corner, looked right at us, and walked away, without saying a word. It was way too dark and impossible to play, so we had to quit.
We walked back to return our clubs, and I asked if there was a manager I could speak to. A young blonde girl says to me: “yes, what’s wrong?” Not knowing she was the manager, I asked if could speak to the manager and she said “I am the manager.” So I complained about being cheated out of being able to end our round, and how it didn’t make sense to have the lights shut off 15 minutes before closing… and she began to spout off the excuses-
-there’s nothing we can do about it -we have no control over the lights -the lights are actually on a timer, and the time they turn off is different every time(((umm… what??))) -(when told they should probably tell paying customers this) we have no idea when they’re going to shut off, so there’s nothing we can really do
We said that this was wrong, and something needs to be done about it to improve. She said she couldn’t do anything, so we suggested telling management, to which she replied “I AM management!!” So it was suggested that they should do better. Apparently she took extreme offense to this, as she stormed out of the doors to the mini golf room(luckily my daughter wasn’t standing in front of the door as it swung open so hard it could have hit and injured someone), and she proceeded to storm into the ice cream doors and slam them shut behind her. Wow, tantrums being thrown in front of customers, how professional of “management.”
Captain sundaes was a total theft of $28.00. Not once were we offered any kind of refund or anything to rectify our loss. Just told “sorry we can’t do anything about it,” and offered sorry excuses and a childlike attitude. I’ll never be visiting here again, and recommend saving your money on their golf course if it’s dark out, as they’ll just shut the lights off and tell you there’s nothing they can...
Read moreWhen you have a craving for ice cream in west Michigan, head on over to this iconic Holland business. Captain Sundae opened in 1980 and quickly became a popular stop as people headed to the State Park at Ottawa Beach. On September 13, 2004, NBC's Today show and George W. Bush who was campaigning stopped by to sample the signature Sundae, the Tommy Turtle. You can read all about the historic visit on the side of the building. In 2005, Captain Sundae opened a second location in Zeeland, followed in 2006 by their Holland South location. In 2012 Mitt Romney visited Captain Sundae and ordered a Peanut Butter Shipwreck during a campaign tour stop and In 2016 Pirates Landing Mini Golf opened for even more family fun.
During my visit I enjoyed the famous Tommy Turtle which they claim people have traveled from around the world to enjoy. I only traveled from Florida. I love the chocolate and caramel combination over pecans that makes up a turtle candy so add ice cream and turn it into sundae and it is that much better. At Captain Sundae they start with the best soft serve vanilla ice cream mix to which they add hot caramel and dark chocolate kept heated to 130 degrees in their pots. The sundae is then topped with buttered pecans, whipped cream, and a cherry. My sundae was creamy, sweet, and salty summertime perfection but if that doesn't appeal they have a number of other cones, sundaes, shakes, and slushes. No visit to Holland would be complete without a visit to the famous...
Read moreWow has this place stood the test of time! I used to come here every summer since '92. I'm really glad I was able to share this place with my gf, which is her first visit to Holland.
We loved it so much, we came here two days in a row. I first had the Scallywag S'mores, which basically tasted like a s'mores filled ice cream in every bite. The second day I had Crow's nest, the almonds had the perfect toasted/crunch to them. It tasted like if an Almond Joy was an ice cream.
Also, they have Non-dairy chocolate and vanilla ice cream!!! It's soy based, not many places have this. So if you are lactose, there is no excuse!
What can I say, I love this place, I used to ride my bike here with my friends back on the days. I'm glad these new generation can enjoy the same vibe I get from Captain Sundae.
A bunch stuff had been updated, from the mini golf, pirate ship, to the souvenir shop. The souvenir shop used be a nautical...
