Poor service, expired food, unappealing, and overpriced. It's so busy in Homer, Alaska in the summertime the restaurants are all full and you are lucky to get a table during prime times. We thought we were fortunate to find this place with a short wait. Well beware, the locals steer clear. While we were waiting, a bar seat opened up so I stepped up to the bar to get a drink. I first asked the lady sitting next to me if it was okay, she was happy for me to sit next to her. The hostess then scolded me and told me I couldn't sit there. I said I was just getting a drink and the lady also jumped in again with me and said she was happy for me to sit there. Well nothing would convince the hostess. So I apologized and stood up and tried to order my drink two times asking the bartenders. They wouldn't serve me. The most surprising event I've ever had at a restaurant. Every restaurant I've ever been in encourages you to go to the bar while you wait. If you have a rule that is different from every restaurant, maybe you should post it? So I left the bar and the open seat at a packed restaurant.
Obviously, at this point I was ready to leave. However, my wife didn't want to try to find another restaurant so we waited and finally were seated (without a beverage). I ordered a dinner salad and they had two sizes and got the large one. Lucky I did, because the large was about the size of a normal side salad. I wondered what the small size could have looked like? It came in an funky shaped dish which I assume was to make up for the size. Other than the funky dish, there was nothing interesting about the salad consisting of lettuce and that's about it. To add to the fun, the lettuce was wilted and half way through I tasted mold. Maybe this was just payback for wanting to order a drink earlier, I mused? I know it's busy this time of year, but steer clear of this place. After getting her meal, my wife finally agreed we should have gone somewhere else too. Don't worry for me, luckily fast food restaurants are still open and I was able to pick something up more appealing (and I never eat fast food) on the way home and the hostess there was so...
Read moreMy husband and I are visiting Alaska on our honeymoon and have really enjoyed the wonderful people and delicious tastes of this state — until coming here.
We checked in at the hostess booth and were told it would be a 45 minute wait for a table — we put our names down and were seated (and hungry!) after the wait.
After being handed the menu, our server came up to us several minutes later to inform us that this was the restaurant’s final night of the season and they were therefore out of almost every dish, including every seafood option. I’m a pescatarian and my husband has a dairy allergy and does not eat red meat, so we were understandably disappointed to learn that 75% of the menu was unavailable after waiting 45 minutes to eat there.
I expressed that the hostess should have been transparent about this with us before taking our information. The server offered to provide a kale salad dish that they could “potentially” add shrimp to. Hungry after a long day of travel and with everything else closing nearby, we asked if any additional sides like rice and beans could be added to this plate, and what the price would be. The server said she would check and be back with us. When she returned, she informed us that only a kale salad with shrimp could be prepared, no other sides were available, and no mention of what they would charge us for this meal (of kitchen scraps!).
We made the decision to leave, at which point the server snapped that she had already put our orders in! We left speechless and ended up going to the grocery store to bring cold food back to our accommodations.
As new visitors to this town, this was an incredibly rude and disappointing first experience. We live in New York City, have worked many years in restaurants, and have never experienced service like this.
Take your money to an establishment where you don’t feel like the staff is dishonest and trying to wring out every last dollar from...
Read moreGood food, great service, a bit stingy with the food for the high price. We went for a late supper while on vacation. Given we were in Alaska, and the specialty of the place is fresh fish, I got the rockfish and chips. My wife got the 16 oz ribeye and my daughters got a cheeseburger and an Oriental dish that I can't remember the name of. The fries were some of the best I've had - light and crispy. The fish was crisp and good. The cheeseburger was very good (my daughter shared a bite). My other daughter thought her dish was excellent and was a very ample portion. The steak was very good. The service was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was nice, if a little crowded. The view was likely wonderful, being right on the spit, but there was thick fog so we didn't get to enjoy that. So, why only 4 stars? Maybe I'm being overly picky, but it is the combination of the high cost and some of the skimpy portions. I get that prices are up everywhere, staffing is expensive and Homer would have factors that make food more expensive. But given the high price of the meals (20 for a burger and fries and 26 for fish n chips), the portion of fries that we got was very small. And the portion of fish wasn't exactly huge either. And with a $45 steak, would it hurt to give more than a meager portion of potatoes and veggies (I think I could have counted the pieces of potatoes on one hand). So, given the high price and small portions of relatively inexpensive sides, I'm dropping a...
