🍣 Mitch’s Fish Market & Sushi Bar – Hidden Gem That Redefines Fresh 🐟

This place right here? Next-level sushi—like, can’t-stop-thinking-about-it-for-days kind of next-level. Mitch’s doesn’t just serve food—they serve an experience. Tucked away near the airport in an unassuming strip area, you'd never guess this humble little spot is home to some of the finest sushi outside of Japan. But trust me: one bite and you'll understand why it’s legendary.

The fish? Insanely fresh. We’re talking flown-in-directly-from-Tsukiji-Market kind of fresh 🛬🐠. Every slice of sashimi melts in your mouth like butter. The toro? Dreamy. The uni? Briny perfection. Even the wasabi is real-deal, grated-from-the-root stuff—not that fake green paste. Every plate is a masterclass in precision and purity.

Now, let me be clear—I’d heard this was a spot President Obama likes to visit. And if you know me, you know I’m not exactly a fan 😏. But hey, I’m not gonna let politics get in the way of damn good sushi. I went anyway, kept an open mind, and man—I’m glad I did. This place is worth crossing any ideological line if it means I get to taste that buttery toro one more time.

The vibe inside? Intimate, no-frills, and totally focused on the food. The chefs take their craft seriously, and it shows in every detail. You’re not there for flash—you’re there for flavor that hits deep. The service is attentive, respectful, and full of aloha.

Reservations are a must (this place is no secret to those in the know), and it’s not cheap—but trust me, you get what you pay for and then some. It’s the kind of meal you remember, talk about, and plan your return trip around.

So if you’re a sushi purist, seafood snob, or just someone who appreciates food done exactly right, Mitch’s is your place. No hype—just...

If your not local don't bother eating hear. They don't want your business! This place came highly recommended to family we were visiting on Oahu. They asked for reccomendations from neighbors for the best sushi restaurant and they were referred Mitch's. We have not had a worse dining experience. If I could give 0 stars I would. From the moment were seated we were treated coldly by our waitress! We should have taken the que and left, but no we stayed till the bitter end and now we no bond over what we all consider to be a horrible experience. We believe that she never put our order in, and she disappeared. After about 45min we were able to get her attention or another person to inquire on the status of our order and the soup we ordered as an appetizer. Finally the soup came. She place the scalding hot soup down on my husband's chopstick and when he went to move his napkin and chopsticks the soup spilled over his pants and shirt. The waitress had disappeared again at this point and the kind kitchen staff did their best to help him clean up. The next time she appeared. She place another soup in front of him without saying a word. I think by this time Mitche's had closed but still no sushi. When the main course finally appeared she did not say a word - she did not ask us if we had any questions about the order or wanted anything else. Also, the fish in the rolls were tiny pieces and one of the rolls we ordered was horrible tasting- I was upset when I learned sweet husband left this awful waitress 20% - she deserved 0!! I have had better service and 🍣 from the supermarket! Save your money- go somewhere else,...

I called them last minute on Monday to see if they have any availabilities for Tuesday night. Unfortunately they were fully booked but they were able to accommodate the two of us.

They don't have omakase apparently so we just ordered ala carte. We started with the chef choice sashimi omakase with 6 fish. The toro was good but still could be defrosted a little more. I considered other omakase places I tried in town to be half frozen so this was 1/3rd frozen . Better than those outside but still could be better. And yes as other reviews mentioned, their cuts are thicker also. All the pieces were ok but the salmon was really good! Literally melted in my mouth.

Then we ordered a few pieces ala carte. The scallops also could be more defrosted so this was also about 1/3rd frozen. Uni was great and creamy. Ikura was also good. This toro piece was better but a tad veiny. The abalone was interesting....I have also had softer ones. But this was pretty crisp. The liver that came w it tasted a tad gamy, the ponzu sauce and scallion ginger helped but still not my favorite. The seared toro was very nice and melted in the mouth. (Again fully defrosted/cooked vs not thawed enough). The maguro was also 1/3rd frozen so didn't melt. The fluke fin was interested but very veiny and chewy (hard to disintegrate when you bite)

Overall I would come back for the salmon and perhaps if we buy the platter and let it thaw a tad more to room temp, more pieces would melt in the mouth.

It's better than sushi ginza onedera though for the price. Quality is...

Story Time: I'm a huge believer in eating local food, recommended by locals wherever I travel. I ask Uber drivers, coworkers and especially our chefs where to eat when I visit that area. In January 2018, I traveled to Hawai'i to assess a newly-acquired operating company with my boss and two other senior leaders. After our first day on-site at one of the new locations, we agreed to meet for dinner. Having already sought out a series of recommendations that aren't tourist traps and knowing the four of us were sushi fans, I suggested Mitch's. My companions ribbed me the whole way to the restaurant because the area is pretty industrial, and the exterior is not particularly inviting. When we arrived, one of them even hopped out to peek in the window and ran back to the Uber... and we left. They teased me all the way to Nico's Pier 38 which - let's say - is not the type of place I seek out. They gave me grief all the way to our table, and even told our server the story and that I would no longer be allowed to pick the restaurants. The server was taken aback... asking me where the heck I had taken them. I told him we had initially gone to Mitch's Fish Market. He looked them dead in the eye and said, "oh, you should've stayed there - that place is awesome!" Fast forward 18 months. I'm back in Honolulu, and I'm spiking the ball. Omakase - and some of the best sushi I've ever had. If you don't know what Omakase is/means, Google it and then place your faith in the competent itamae behind the counter. I'll be back. tl;dr: Mitch's Fish Market kicks butt.
